Robert E. "Bob" Snively, 82, of Columbus, died at 6:13 p.m. Thursday, December 12, 2024, at his home.
Bob had been retired many years but was a former small engine salesman with the former Hoosier Parts Warehouse and also worked at Country Bins farm and hardware store and Eudy Sales and Service.
He was certified by the YMCA and the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) to teach SCUBA diving and conducted classes for countless individuals as well as police and fire department personnel in the area.
He had been an assistant Scoutmaster and an advisor of a co-ed Explorer Post with Boy Scouts of America and served as district explorer chairman and as a district commissioner for Lenni Lenape District.
He was past master of Hartsville Masonic Lodge F&AM No. 547. He was Master in 1978 which was Hartsville's 100th anniversary and had the Lodge rededicated by the Grand Lodge of the state of Indiana. He was a member of Hoosier Hills Rifle and Pistol Club and a life endowment member of the National Rifle Association.
Born in Columbus Nov. 12, 1942, Bob was the son of Clyde and Frances Snively. Clyde drowned in 1944 while attempting to rescue a Boy Scout from a flooded river and a few years later Frances married Karlin McIver who loved and raised Bob as his own son.
Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Sheila Snively; three children, Beth Snively of Columbus, Matt Snively and his wife Beth of Carmel, and Molly Jenkins and her husband Larry of Columbus; six grandchildren, Abby Snively of New Jersey, Katie Snively of Chicago, Ben Jenkins and Tom Jenkins, both of Columbus; Josh Snively of Carmel and Emma Jenkins of Bloomington; a great-grandson, Jonah Jenkins; a brother, Tim McIver and his wife Pam of Columbus; and a nephew, Mike McIver and his wife A.J. of Hope.
He was preceded in death by two half brothers, Jack and Ted Snively; a niece, Kelly McIver; and three best friends, Jim Cowles, formerly of Columbus, and German Shepherds Scout and Evi.
Cremation is planned. There will be no funeral service or visitation.
Memorials may be made to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana Inpatient Facility for upkeep of the gardens there.
Arrangements were made by Barkes, Weaver and Glick Funeral Home.
