Robert Spence Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Lee-Ellena Funeral Home on Feb. 10, 2026.
It is with heavy hearts, yet profound gratitude for a life well lived, that we announce the passing of Robert "Bob" Spence, of Jacksonville, Florida, age 78, who peacefully departed this world on February 9, 2026. Bob was born on December 4, 1947, in Detroit, Michigan, to Robert E. and Patricia Jean Spence. Throughout his life, he was guided by love, integrity, service, and a spirited sense of adventure.

On May 17, 1980, Bob married his beloved wife, Karen Leo. Together, they built a warm and joyful life filled with laughter, devotion, and cherished memories. He loved being with his beloved dog, ChooChoo, and Bob was a devoted father to Robert A. (Julie) Spence, Jack Spence, and Troy Spence, instilling in them values of kindness, perseverance, and respect. He was also a proud and adoring grandfather to Lauren and Nicholas Spence, who brought him immense happiness.

Bob honorably served his country as an Army veteran of the Vietnam War. His commitment to service continued throughout his life through his active leadership in the Boy Scouts, where he mentored his sons and many other young people, teaching them the importance of teamwork, responsibility, and character.

Professionally, Bob enjoyed a fulfilling career at Ford Motor Company, where he was especially proud of his work on the Employee Involvement Team, helping to promote collaboration and innovation in the workplace. In retirement, he remained dedicated to his community, serving as a school crossing guard at Seneca Middle School, a role he approached with care and commitment.

Bob had many passions that enriched his life. He loved cars - from classic vehicles to the thrill of motorsports - and he especially enjoyed attending the races at Michigan International Speedway. Bob also cherished the great outdoors, and camping trips were some of his happiest moments with family and friends. A devoted sports fan, he savored every chance to travel, including memorable trips to Las Vegas to attend the Super Bowl, where he enjoyed the excitement and camaraderie of the game-day experience.

Bob cherished sports throughout his life. He enjoyed bowling, racquetball, and softball, and he took great pride in completing the Boston Marathon - a testament to his determination and strength of spirit. His enthusiasm for life, humor, and generosity inspired everyone around him.

Bob is survived by his loving wife Karen; his children Robert A. (Julie) Spence, Jack Spence, and Troy Spence; his grandchildren Lauren and Nicholas; his sister Linda (Randy) Bartosik; his brother Michael (Karen Heminway) Spence, and his beloved dog ChooChoo and many extended family members and friends who cherished him deeply.

He is now reunited in peace with his parents, Robert E. and Patricia Jean Spence, as well as his beloved grandparents William and Mary Frances Kearns and John and Grace Spence.

Bob will be profoundly missed, but his legacy of love, kindness, and joyful spirit will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. Rest in peace, Bob
