STARR, Robert D. - beloved husband, father and grandfather, of Clio, formerly of Mt. Morris age 69, died Tuesday, January 8, 2008 at the U of M Hospital in Ann Arbor. Funeral services will be held 1 PM Saturday, January 12, 2008 at Messiah Lutheran Church in Clio. Pastor Eric Cloeter officiating with burial at Flint Memorial Park. Friends may call at the O'Guinn Family Funeral Home in Clio on Friday from 12-4 & 6-9pm. Robert will lie in state at the church on Saturday from 12 noon until time of service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Food Bank of East Michigan, St. Jude's Children's Hospital or to the Samaritan Fund at Messiah Lutheran Church. Robert was born September 12, 1938 in Saginaw, Michigan to the late Roy and Margaret (Furlo) Starr. He had resided in the Clio area the past 4 years coming from Mt. Morris. Robert married Barbara Vessey on January 14, 1958. He was employed with Chevrolet Truck & Bus for 38 years, retiring in 2000 and was a member of UAW Local # 598. He was also a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Clio. Robert loved baseball and was signed by the Detroit Tigers in 1958. Afterwards he played for several years in Class A City Baseball Leagues and many softball leagues. He also coached several baseball teams including Little League, and Ladies Softball teams at Messiah Lutheran Church. In addition to his coaching, Robert also played on the Men's Softball team at Messiah Lutheran. He loved hunting and fishing and was an accomplished bowler in several area men's and mixed doubles league. He also loved to be up north at the cabin at Little Bear Lake, boating and skiing with his kids. Surviving are: wife, Barbara; children, Robert (Stacey) Starr Jr. of Jackson, Debra (Rodney) Severn of New Lothrop, Michael (Traci) Starr of Clio; grandchildren, Nickolas Starr of Flint, Austin, Emily and Autumn Severn of New Lothrop, Emerson Starr of Clio, Cameron Kulas of Jackson; sister, Paula (Tim) Brock of Mt. Morris; brother-in-law, John (Julie) Vessey of CO; Several nieces and nephews; mother-in-law, Marjorie Woolley of Flint. Many special friends from Messiah's Ladies Softball Teams. Robert was also preceded in death by his son, Jimmy and father-in-law, Les Woolley. The family wishes to thank everyone at U of M Hospital for their care and support. The Bone Marrow Transplant Team and especially the staff of 8A, who showed such love and compassion to Bob during his final days. It is truly appreciated.
