Robert Franklin (Bob) Steger age 89, passed away Sunday, March 10, 2024 in a local hospital.
Bob was born on June 17, 1934. He was the second son of Allen Merritt (A.M.) and Grace Melton Steger. He grew up in the rural community of Liberty Grove. He attended Liberty Grove and Atlanta schools and graduated from Atlanta High School.
Bob joined the Navy during the Korean Conflict and served on the ships USS Washburn and USS Bexar obtaining the rank of Engineer 2nd Class. After the Navy, he returned to Atlanta and married Louise Greene on June 21, 1958. He then learned the building trades and followed in the footsteps of his father becoming a Journeyman Bricklayer. He went on to construct many homes and businesses in the Ark-La-Tex area and beyond.
Bob's participation in the community was extensive and he was always ready to volunteer in any capacity. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftsman. At the VFW, he was chief fish cooker for their many fish fry fundraisers until his health no longer allowed him stand for long periods of time. When serving as chaplain for the American Legion, he was responsible for coordinating cemetery monuments for his fellow veterans. He was named Volunteer of the Year in 2010 by the Atlanta Area Chamber of Commerce. Bob also served his community when he was elected to the Atlanta School Board, Atlanta City Council, and was a member of the Cass County Appraisal board.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Allen Merritt (A.M.) and Grace Melton Steger; and his brother, Charles Steger.
Bob is survived by his wife of 65 years, Louise Greene Steger of Atlanta, Texas; daughters, Toni Steger of Plano, Texas, Adonna (Donnie) Skinner of Maumelle, Arkansas; granddaughter, Kaylee Skinner of Little Rock, Arkansas; brother, Don Steger of Fort Worth, Texas; and a host other of relatives and friends.
Interment will be in the City of Waxahatchie Cemetery, Waxahatchie, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to any Veteran Support Organization or a charity of your choice.
