Robert Strickland Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Revels Funeral Home - Lumberton on Jul. 28, 2024.
Mr. Robert Lee Strickland, 92, of Lumberton, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 26, 2024. He leaves behind a legacy of hard work, dedication, and love for the Lord. For 48 years, Robert was the self-employed owner of Interior & Exterior Paint and Wallpaper, taking immense pride in his work. He relied solely on word-of-mouth advertising, a testament to his outstanding craftsmanship and dedication. His employees respected him not only for his standards but also for the genuine care he showed them.
A lifelong member of Union Baptist Church for over 60 years, Robert served as a Sunday School teacher, Trustee, and choir member. A true steward of God, he was often praised as a fine man. His life was a testament to his faith, kindness, and unwavering commitment to helping others. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He was born on Thursday, July 21, 1932, to the late Robert Strickland and Sarah Jane D. Lowry. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mildred Clark Strickland, whom he cherished for 47 years; two sisters, Estelle Hodges and Lucille Emory; and one brother, Bobby Strickland.
Robert was drafted by the United States Army during the Korean War in 1953, serving in CO C 18th Infantry Regiment (Gunner). He was awarded the Army of Occupation Medal (Germany) and the National Defense Service Medal.
His call to help others led him to serve on the Lumbee River EMC Board of Directors for over 25 years. Known for his willingness to assist anyone in need-whether during storms, managing power lines over trees, setting up new service, or helping with bills-he was the go-to man in his community, always ready to lend a hand. Additionally, he began a journey on the Board of Trustees at Robeson Community College, serving for over 15 years.
Robert leaves behind cherished memories with his children, Barney Clark (Phillis) of Lumberton and Joan Flanagan of Lumberton; four grandchildren, Sherry Byrd (Chris), Anita Jacobs (Aubrey) of Lumberton, Heather Phillips (Matthew) of Lumberton, and Jamie Flanagan of Lumberton; and seven great-grandchildren, Ryan, Taner, Tyler, Blake, Callie, Cammie and Paityn, all of Lumberton. He is also survived by one brother, Jackie Strickland of Pembroke; one sister, Gerlean Hunt of Lumberton; and a host of relatives and friends.
