Robert Swoyer Obituary

Robert Allen "Bob" Swoyer Jr., 63, passed away peacefully at his residence surrounded by his loved ones on January 12, 2023. He was the loving husband of Barbara (Bickel) Swoyer, with whom he shared 37 years of marriage. Born in Reading on September 22, 1959, he was the son of the late Robert A. Swoyer Sr. and Roxanna (Blimline) Swoyer. After graduating from Tulpehocken High School in 1977, he went on to earn a bachelor's degree from Lehigh University in 1981 and a master's degree from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1982, both in structural engineering. Robert's career as a structural engineer spanned over 40 years, and included more than 30 years as a partner with his father in Robert A. Swoyer Associates. Before Bob put his seal on any design, every detail was fastidiously and meticulously checked. Bob was a devoted father, husband, son, brother and friend. His passion for horses, particularly participation in Berks Pony Club with his horse "Full Cry," was the main focus of his youth. He was an avid cyclist, triathlete, and yogi; a reluctant runner; and a forever faithful Philadelphia sports fan. Many priceless memories were made on the trails and roads with Team Nothing Stupid teammates and his annual pilgrimage to Philadelphia Phillies Spring Training with best friends. Family adventures around the globe were Bob's favorite travel memories -- hiking Machu Picchu and summiting Mt Kilimanjaro were true highlights. Bob's heart will forever belong in "Pleasantville," his nickname for Oxford, MD where Bob and Barbara together found their peaceful paradise, a love for yoga, and very special friends. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son Samuel Robert, married to Lisa Louise Broom, of Washington, DC, daughter Mary Elizabeth, of Washington, DC, daughter Johanna Christine, of New York, NY, granddaughter Elaine Gloria Swoyer and sister Robin Alana Swoyer of Tucson, AZ. A memorial service will be held at 11am on Saturday, January 21, 2023 at Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, 739 Penn Ave, West Reading, PA 19611. Friends and Family are invited to gather at the funeral home from 9:30am until the time of the service In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the CJD Foundation Robert A. Swoyer Jr Memorial Grant, online www.cjdfoundation.org/donate or CJD Foundation, 3634 W Market St., Suite 110, Akron, Ohio 44333. This grant will fund further research of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD).
