Robert Scott Umstead, age 61, of Mears, Michigan, passed away on Wednesday, April 2, 2025. Born on April 9, 1963, in Grand Rapids, he was the son of the late Roger and Shirley (Belrose) Umstead.
Bob proudly served his country in the United States Army, first on active duty from 1980 to 1983, and then in the Army Reserve until 1993, completing his service with honor. He was married in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he welcomed his beloved daughter, Ashley, in 1988.
Following his military service and the dissolution of his marriage, Bob returned to his family home in Oceana County, Michigan. Over the years, he worked in a variety of mechanical roles and was happiest when turning a wrench. Known for his easygoing spirit and love of camaraderie, Bob enjoyed spending time with others playing horseshoes, foosball, darts, bowling, and riding mopeds.
Bob is survived by: his daughter, Ashley Hodges; granddaughter, Frances Hodges; sister, Kathy Wilson; and brother, Richard Umstead.
Bob was preceded in death by: his parents, sister, Nancy Gillette; and brother, Thomas Umstead.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at Fort Custer National Cemetery on Friday, April 18, 2025, at 1:00 PM. A Celebration of Life will follow on Saturday, April 19, 2025, at 2:30 PM at Deb's Café.
Arrangements are being handled by Harris Funeral Home in Shelby, Michigan.
