Bobby was one of my greatest friends in the world. We were friends and neighbors since we were toddlers in Omaha. We ate at each others tables, liked each others parents and the others siblings. Bobby even went steady with my sister Patsy for a couple of weeks. He was a natural athlete in baseball, and especially so in football. I have never seen anyone throw a football further than him, and with accuracy. He quarterbacked our high school intramural team, the Peg Pounders, for three consecutive years.
He was central to our group of boys throughout high school - me, Bill Crawford, Mike Gallagher, Loyd Fjerstad, Jerry Oetter, et. al.
My family was there when he married Diane, and we all celebrated that wonderful event afterwards at the Parkside Cafe.
After Bobby married and I started college we saw less and less of each other; thats understandable and predictable, but still bittersweet - growing-up is. At some point he permanently moved to Arizona, and I to Boston. We talked on the phone about 10 years ago, updated our lives, did some reminiscing, re-lived some moments that were good, some that were not-so-good. I told him I thought the statute-of-limitations had expired on my past indiscretions. He laughed that laugh which was uniquely his. We said wed keep in touch.
I never saw or talked to Bobby Volcheck again.
As I remember him today we are both about 6 or 7, sitting on his little porch on North 45th Street in Omaha. We are giving each other spelling and arithmetic tests because we thought it was both important and fun. Two boys, friends, who hadnt a clue that they would be entwined in each others lives forever, and maybe, maybe, beyond that. I will miss him.
My condolences to his family. I am truly sorry for your loss.

I was so sorry to hear of Bob's passing. The last time I saw and spoke to him was at our Holy Angels, 8th grade class reunion in Omaha quite a few years ago. We were friends in grade school and high school. Unfortunately, I never kept in touch over the years.
My condolences and sorrow go out to Bob's wife and family.
Sincerely,
Warren Roh
