WAKELEE, age 85; beloved husband for 44 years of the late Josephine (nee DiCicco); loving father of Tracie Wakelee, and loving stepfather of Robert Gielink (Joann), Heidi Sprafka (Mike) and Robin Coshia; Devoted grandfather of Jordan & Grace Gielink, Alicia McKrill (Kyle), Preston & Cassandra Smith, and Robbie & Brittany Ahlin, and caring great-grandfather of ten; cherished son of the late Robert H. and Doris (nee Jones) Wakelee; committed caretaker of his feline companion Little Guy; dear uncle and great-uncle of many. U.S. Army Veteran. Contributions may be made in memory of Robert to The Alzheimer's Association at 8522 East Ave, Mentor, OH 44060 or online HERE.
Robert was born on December 26, 1939, to Robert H. and Doris in Cleveland Ohio. He graduated from Collinwood Highschool before choosing to serve his country in the United States Army. He was deployed in Japan and greatly enjoyed his time there. It was in Japan that he bought his first camera, a purchase that he was very proud of. Robert was an incredibly kind son, continued to support his mother and grandmother while he was out of the country. He met the love of his life, Josephine, and the two were happily married on July 11, 1981. The two of them settled down in Mentor, where they remained for 26 years. Robert worked as a salesman for Sear's hardware department for 20 years, where his talent for memorizing information made him a well-respected and valued employee. When he wasn't working or spending time with his family, Robert could be found Golfing, Bowling, cheering on his favorite Cleveland sports teams (especially the Indians), cutting the grass, going out to lunch, taking weekend trips with Josephine, and annually going to Friday night happy hour at The Avenue. He was a big fan of 'oldies' music, such as classic rock from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. Robert enjoyed celebrating every holiday, but his Halloween parties are remembered most fondly by those who attended with them. He always looked forward to Sunday night pasta dinner that his wife cooked but also savored hotdogs and mac and cheese. Being married and being a husband is what brought him the most enjoyment in life, along with spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was best described as being quiet and laid back, yet also undeniably loving towards his family. Robert passed away on September 2, 2025, leaving behind a legacy as a man who put family and country before himself.
