Robert Harry Wandersee, the son of Edwin and Alice (Ruemke) Wandersee, was born October 24, 1933, in New Ulm, Minnesota. He married Janet Krohn from nearby Lafayette, Minnesota, on January 19th, 1958, and were happily married for almost 65 years. Bob and Jan had two children - Tom and David.
Upon graduating barber college, Bob, Jan and their new born son Tom relocated from Minnesota to Ames, Iowa, so Bob could begin his career as a barber. A year and a half later came another son David. In 1986, Bob, Jan and David all moved to Austin, Texas, where their son Tom lived. Finally his last 22 years were spent in Kyle, Texas, just down the road from Austin.
Bob was a loving husband, father, and provider. He enjoyed his career as a barber immensely, and was active with it all the way into his seventies. He opened his first barbershop "University Barbers" in Ames, Iowa, when his boys were still young. He ran his successful shop until moving to Texas where he opened another barbershop in 1989 called "South Austin Barber Shop". The barbering business truly became a family affair! Bob was so pleased and proud that both his grandsons, Matt and Robbie, followed in their grandpa's footsteps, and became barbers too. His son Tom owns the original shop and has opened another location as well. Bob literally and amazingly never missed a scheduled day of work for all those years! He was truly a barber in every sense of the word, as being a barber involves lots of talking and telling stories. Bob had the best stories and just when you thought you'd heard them all, he'd come up with another gem.
Bob stayed on the go most of the time. As soon as he would be off from the barbershop, he would shift his focus to family. The Wandersee family spent many three-day weekends camping and fishing in Iowa, and traveled every summer somewhere fun. Bob took his boys hunting as soon as they could walk successfully through the Iowa terrain. Bob followed Tom and Dave's athletic endeavors enthusiastically, and never missed a contest. He was what every boy's dream of a fun caring father would be like.
He was a handyman who attempted to fix everything, and was usually successful. He enjoyed landscaping and growing flowers wherever he lived, with the guidance of his loving wife Janet. He really enjoyed traveling by car, and with Janet as the co-pilot, his family logged thousands and thousands of miles from coast to coast.
He had an unwavering Christian faith that served him well throughout the years as he did face some trying situations. His son David had a tragic accident after graduating high school, leaving him permanently disabled. Bob's optimistic outlook on life allowed him to continually move forward, keeping the family intact and happy. Before his health declined, he enjoyed his church family at Bethany Lutheran Church, attending Bible study and services regularly.
Survivors include his two sons Tom and David Wandersee, his grandsons Matthew and Robert (Robbie) Wandersee, granddaughter Alika Wandersee, and great granddaughter Annalise Wandersee.
In addition to his parents Edwin and Alice Wandersee, Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Janet, his twin sister Marion, younger sister Ruth, and great grandson Benjamin Wandersee.
