Robert Washabaugh Obituary

Robert G. "Pap" Washabaugh, 91, of Canonsburg, passed away peacefully, in his home surrounded by his family, Sunday, January 11, 2026. He was born September 1, 1934, at home in Canonsburg, a son of John and Grace Bowers Washabaugh. Bob was a 1953 graduate of Chartiers High School. In 1957, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he received basic training at Fort Benning, Ga. After basic training, he was stationed in Panama as a Specialist 1st Class, guarding the Panama Canal. On July 25, 1959, he married his high school sweetheart, Audrey J. Crawford. They recently celebrated their 66th anniversary. In 1962, they established Washabaugh & Sons Poultry Farm, raising 10,000 chickens and selling eggs and Black Angus beef cattle. Bob also worked 26 years for the Canon- McMillan School District as a bus driver, driving bus #26. He was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Houston and a member of the American Legion Post #902 in Houston. Until his health failed, Bob enjoyed a daily visit to his son's trucking company Valley Bulk Transport, Inc., where he would sit and converse with the drivers, employees and other family members as the unofficial boss. He spent his days happily sitting in his recliner on his iPad playing solitaire with his dog in his lap. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are three children, Robert Washabaugh Jr. (Becky) and John Washabaugh (Rebecca), both of Canonsburg, and Robin Smith (Kenneth) of Claysville; a daughter-in- law, Lori Washabaugh of Canonsburg; along with 13 grandchildren, John Washabaugh Jr. (Stephanie), Edward Washabaugh (Jena), Andrew Washabaugh (Christine), Ashley Washabaugh, William Washabaugh, Joseph Washabaugh (Madison), Samuel Washabaugh (Tera), Joshua Smith (Cecelia), Chelsey Smith and Emily Anestis (Ron); three stepgrandchildren, Brandon Williamson (Gina), Steven Williamson and Richard Williamson; 20 great- grandchildren, Gabriella, Nia, Eliana, Gracie, Weston, Kason, Cyrus, Alexander, Kennedy, Conner and Regan Washabaugh, Jocelyn Allen, Bailey and Liam Smith, Jacob, Kate and Nathan Anestis, Dalton and Dawson Siler, and Addilyn Williamson; and a niece, Linda Roessler Smiley of Florence, S.C. Deceased, in addition to his parents, are a son, William Washabaugh; a sister, Betty Roessler; and two nephews, Jay and Donald Roessler. The family would like to acknowledge Jena Carlisle for her ongoing care and comfort of Bob during his illness, with the assistance of Jody Checonsky. Also, his best friend, Dan Cumer for never missing a daily visit and his wife, Doureen for providing food and comfort to the family. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, January 14, in the McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home Ltd., Robert K. McIlvaine, owner/supervisor, 27 Cherry Avenue, Houston, PA 15342, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 15, with the Rev. Benjamin Libert officiating. Bob drove all three of our children on bus 26. The kids loved him. He was always pleasant and friendly. We also bought eggs from him. He was a great guy. Our sincere condolences to his family.
