Robert E. Wech, a resident of Peabody and formerly of Rockport, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 2, 2026. He was 81.
Robert was born in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, on July 6, 1944, the son of the late Emerson Wech and Sarah E. (Small) Wech. He was raised in Kingston, Pennsylvania, where he graduated from Kingston High School with the Class of 1962. During his teenage years, Bob discovered what would become a lifelong passion for music, particularly the church organ.
He pursued that passion at the Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College, graduating in 1966 with organ as his applied instrument. Bob's musical talent and dedication soon led him into a career that spanned several decades, serving houses of worship across New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts as an organist and choir director. Through his music, he enriched the worship experience for countless congregations.
Bob was a longtime member of the American Guild of Organists and the Organ Historical Society. His final position was as Organist and Choir Director at the Wakefield/Lynnfield United Methodist Church in Wakefield.
Beyond his work in church music, Bob was known for his deep appreciation of Broadway musicals. Friends and colleagues often delighted in his ability to sit at a piano or organ and effortlessly play favorite show tunes at a moment's notice.
Bob will be remembered by numerous cousins across the United States. His music and sunny disposition will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Services will be announced. Donations in Bob's name may be made to Wakefield/Lynnfield United Methodist Church, 273 Vernon St., Wakefield MA 01880.
