Loretta M. Destefano

Loretta M. (Rimer) Destefano, 91, of Melrose, passed away on Wednesday, February 25, 2026 at her home.

Born in Boston on February 1, 1935 to Joseph and Anna (Knaiz) Rimer, Loretta (or Laurie as she was called in her youth), was raised in Mattapan and graduated from Jeremiah E. Burke High School. In her youth, she enjoyed time spent with friends, especially summer days at the beach filled with laughter. She began her professional life as a dedicated bookkeeper and secretary, known for her reliability, sharp mind, and steady presence.

During the 1960s and 1970s, she raised her two kids, Leslie and Ricky, as a single mother. With determination, grace, and unwavering love, she built a home filled with warmth, structure, and encouragement.

Since the 1970s, Loretta enjoyed a harmonious loving marriage to Anthony (Tony) Destefano. Together, they made a beautiful home full of laughter and respect and built a happy life together in Melrose. Loretta took on her role as stepmom to Kathy, Greg and David with love, great joy and steadiness. 

Loretta possessed a deep curiosity about the universe, with a special love for astronomy science and anthropology. She could often be found gazing at the night sky in wonder and amazement. She shared that joy with her children. A devoted fan of classic jazz, her home was frequently filled with the timeless sounds of legends such as Miles Davis, Artie Shaw, John Coltrane and Charlie Parker. whose music she adored. She also enjoyed drawing, expressing her creativity quietly but beautifully.

Her favorite role was that of grandmother. She found immense joy as a grandmother to 12 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, embracing the role with pride and tenderness. She enjoyed hosting her grandchildren for weekend fun and games. She particularly enjoyed playing board games and playing both Texas Hold 'Em and Rummy for hours with her grandchildren.

Hosting family dinners was one of her greatest pleasures - her table was a place of connection, games and love. And everyone loved her stuffing and gravy!

Loretta was also a loyal fan of Star Trek, inspired by its optimism, exploration, and belief in a better future - values she carried in her own life. One of her most treasured adventures was a trip to England, a journey she spoke of often and remembered fondly.

She will be remembered for her lively spirit, quiet creativity, deep love for family, and the resilience that defined her life. Her legacy lives on in the traditions she created, and the curiosity about the stars she passed down.

She will be deeply missed and forever loved.
