Robert O. Wessler November 18, 1930 – June 25, 2025
Robert (Bob) O. Wessler, 94, of New Lisbon, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2025, in the beautiful home he built, surrounded by the woods, wildlife, and family he cherished.
Born on November 18, 1930, in Tarnevole Germany, Robert lived a life marked by perseverance, quiet strength, and deep love for his family. After arriving in the United States following World War II, he worked on a farm while adapting to American life and learning English. He went on to serve in the U.S. Army, working in heavy machinery and construction, skills that became a cornerstone of his life's work.
Robert spoke four languages fluently, a reflection of his sharp mind and ability to adapt. His journey from post-war Europe to building a lasting home in Wisconsin stands as a testament to his determination and work ethic.
It was in the U.S. that he met and married Erna Wessler, the love of his life. Together, they settled in New Lisbon, where they created a home full of warmth, surrounded by trees, gardens, and the sound of family. Erna preceded him in death, but the home they built together remained the heart of Robert's life until the very end.
Robert was a gifted woodworker, creating intricate layered, mixed-grain bowls and vases right up until the month before he passed. He remained active and creative to the very end. His lathe still holds a partially finished bowl, a quiet testament to a life always in motion. He gave his wooden pieces as gifts to those he loved or deeply appreciated, each piece a reflection of his craftsmanship and generosity. One of his favorite routines was filling the hummingbird feeder outside his picture window and watching the birds flutter in, simple moments that brought him great peace. Enjoying a meal together, telling stories and good jokes, he was a steady, loving presence across four generations.
He is survived by his sons Herbert Wessler (Christy) and Jerry Wessler; grandchildren Philip Wessler (Elizabeth), Robin Sobieski, Karen Szponder (Mark), Jenivieve Elly (Jonathan), Miles Wessler, and Anastacia Gunn-Ulrich (Trevor); and great-grandchildren Lucas Elly, Liam Elly, Lorelei Elly, Leia Gunn-Ulrich, and Link Ulrich.
Robert's legacy is one of grit, grace, and love, a life built from the ground up, shaped by hard work, devotion to family, and a steadfast belief in what could be created with his own two hands. His faith in God was central to who he was. He sat in the front row of church on Sunday's and opened his home with open arms to any family member in need of shelter or a good meal. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
"A life well-lived doesn't end. It echoes in every handmade gift, every family gathering, and every moment of peace in a place called home."

HARRY FRITZ

September 3, 2025

The irony of Robert's last days was that Brigitte & Harry Fritz were driving from Tacoma, WA, on 6/26/25 with the intent to visit him at our arrival for our Fritz Family Reunion on July 2. Imagine our surprise when we were visiting family burial sites at the cemetery and found a fresh grave at Robert's marker! We had not been informed; otherwise, we would have expedited our trip.
Robert and Erna were friends of my parents and me ever since my early teens, and while they resided in Illinois. They followed our ministry route through North Carolina and Washington State. What a shame that we missed having one last conversation with him.
I guess we will have to wait until we arrive at heaven's shores...
May the Lord Jesus Christ comfort all the family and friends of Robert.
Harry Fritz, O.M.
