Robert Frank "Bob" Whitaker, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in
Saluda, North Carolina, surrounded by family on January 13, 2026. He was 86 years old.
Born in Polk County, North Carolina, on October 7, 1939, Bob was the son of the late Frank and Florence Thompson Whitaker. A man of great character and warmth, he possessed a big personality and never met a stranger. Bob could hold long conversations with anyone he encountered, leaving a lasting impression on all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Bob's professional life was marked by an entrepreneurial spirit. After retiring from DuPont, he pursued his passion for automobiles, owning several car businesses over the years and providing vehicle inspections for much of Polk County. His love for traditional country, bluegrass, and gospel music, along with his dedication to preserving square dancing, led him and his first wife, Ann, to host square dances at the Saluda School gym for 26 joyful years.
After Ann's passing, Bob found love again with Linda, with whom he shared many wonderful years. Together, Bob and Linda became the proud owners and operators of The Saluda Mountain Jamboree, which later became known as The Party Place and Event Center, continuing his love of music, community, and bringing people together.
His interests were as vibrant as his personality. Bob was an avid fan of dirt track racing and Atlanta Braves baseball. A devout member of First Baptist Church, Saluda, Bob's faith was evident in his commitment to his church community. He is preceded in death by his parents; his first wife of 25 years, Ann Summers Whitaker; his son, Robert Timothy Whitaker; and his sister, June Whitaker Ashley.
Bob is survived by his devoted wife of 38 years, Linda Hoxit Whitaker; his cherished daughters, Jill Pence and husband Paige, and Jessica Justice and husband Mark; his step-son, Daren Gillespie and wife Jennie; his step-daughter, Amy Gillespie Exline and husband Dwight; and his treasured grandchildren: Tim Hill (Nikki), Will Justice (Anna Kate), Jake Justice (Hannah), Abigail Campbell, Gracie Gillespie, and Jillian Gillespie.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, January 16, 2026, at First Baptist Church in Saluda, with Rev. Randy Ramsey and Rev. Larry McDonald officiating. Burial will follow in the Saluda City Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Friday at the church.
