Robert Whitner Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Affinity Memorial Chapel - Columbus on Sep. 15, 2025.
Robert Charles Whitner, Sr., affectionately known as "Pops", 87, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away on September 12, 2025. He was born on July 13, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan, to Louise and Carl Whitner. He later moved to Xenia, Ohio, where he attended school. At 17, Robert proudly entered the United States Air Force. While stationed in Puerto Rico in 1956, he met the love of his life, Teresa, and together they built a strong, faith-filled marriage of 68 years. The couple eventually settled in Columbus, Ohio, where they raised their family and built a life rooted in love, faith, and community. Robert pursued his entrepreneurial spirit by owning a commercial janitorial business and working as a licensed contractor, where he guided and mentored many youth. Later, he devoted his career to The Ohio State University, where he worked faithfully until his retirement in 1999.

He enjoyed jazz music, fishing, cooking, and football, and he proudly cheered for his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers. Known for his humor and famous dad jokes, Robert brought joy to many. In 1980, he gave his heart to Christ and became a devoted member of Ephesus Seventh-day Adventist Church, where he served faithfully on the Deacon and Hospitality Committees.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Louise and Carl Whitner; brother, Ronald; and sisters, Cleo, and Belva Jean.

He is survived by his wife, Teresa; sisters Johnie M. Dillingham and Yvette; six children, Robert Jr. (Bessie), Sherry, Juan (Cynthia), Jose (Joy), Maria, and Angela; grandchildren, Cameron E., LuJuan (James), Jason, Jordan, Cameron W., Christian, Michael (Joan), Anthony, Lwanna, Nia, David (Charonda), Jeffrey (Shatara), Laressa (Deanthony), Jalen (Alexandria), Justin, and Jenae; along with great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and special friends.

Brother Whitner as we called him around the Foster household or Whit, was always smiling and making jokes but also showing his devotion to Sister Whitney and God. It was nothing for Brother Whitner to make his way up to my room to speak to me and make me laugh always showing up even for my wife at her mother“s funeral.

My dad, his good friend is battling with some health issues but Brother Whitner has visited him in recovery and in the nursing after care facilities, he was there when my mom and dad celebrated their anniversary helping his dear friend Alvin dance with his wife. His example and dedication to Sister Whitner is admirable.

Brother Whitner was an amazing father, husband and friend and will be missed but never forgotten.
