Robert Abernathy Young Jr., 100 years old, passed away Tuesday, February 11, 2025. He was born, July 2, 1924 in Montgomery, Alabama, to Robert A. Young and Louise Williams Young. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Sidney Brewster Young and his son, Rocky Young and daughter, Carolyn Spears.
He is survived by his sister, Betty Keyes of Montgomery, Alabama, his daughter Camille and her husband Locke Bryan of Houston, Texas, his grandson, Frank Bryan and his wife Jikja of Newport Beach, California and his granddaughter Sidney Claire Baughman and her husband Michael of Houston. He is also survived by nieces and nephews and his five great grandchildren, Sora, Lara, Emery, Wilder and Hunter.
Two months before graduating from high school Bob was drafted into the US Army along with the other boys in his class to fight in WWII. He landed on Omaha Beach in 1944 and fought his way across Europe including the Battle of the Bulge. He was stationed in Ulm, Germany at the end of the war where he celebrated his 21st birthday.
In 1948, he graduated from Centenary College of Louisiana in Shreveport, Louisiana. That same year he met and married his wife of 54 years, Sidney Camille Brewster. Together they raised three children and survived their many moves around the oilfields of Louisiana and Texas. Bob worked for Brewster Bartle Drilling Company from 1948-1966. He went back to war in the cold Korean winter of 1950 when he was called up for the Korean Conflict. In 1966 he started his own company, American Towing, headquartered on the Atchafalaya River in Morgan City, Louisiana.
In 1973, Bob and Sidney realized their long-awaited dream of moving to Gonzales, Texas to farm their ranch land and raise cattle. They had many happy years playing golf, hunting, ranching, traveling and making many friends in Gonzales and Monthalia.
Bob served on the board of GVEC for 17 years and on the Hospital Board in Gonzales. Bob was proud of his community and the lifelong friendships he made in Gonzales. A special thanks to the Gindler Family for their love and support for over 20 years. Marian was a special gift to Bob with her lovely laugh and keen interest in traveling the world.
Bob was also an artist and storyteller. He carved blocks of wood and tree trunks into works of art. He carved hundreds of wood pieces which he gave away to whomever admired them. He was legendary for his story telling and spent many a night entertaining friends and family with his oilfield and war stories.
Grateful thanks to the faithful caretakers, Gracie, Maria and Joanne for making Bob's last years safe and happy at home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to Monthalia Methodist Church, 1926 CR112, Cost, TX 78614.
