Roberta J. Clayton, a devoted mother, loving grandmother and great-grandmother, and a compassionate nurse who dedicated her life to caring for others, passed away on Sunday, August 10, 2025, at the age of 97. Born on November 10, 1927, she was the daughter of the late John and Pauline Berry and sister to the late Robert Berry.

She was the beloved wife of the late Thomas L. Clayton, with whom she built a beautiful life and family. She is lovingly remembered by her children: Richard Clayton (Mary), the late Thomas Clayton (Linda), Beth Butera (John), Patrick Clayton (Joyce), Susan Heisler (late Jack), and Mary Ditto (Steve). She was a proud grandmother to Dallas Clayton, the late Dan Clayton, Christopher Clayton (Sissy), Prairie Toole (Mike), Kacie Jankoski (Eric), Sam Butera (Kearstyn), Adam Miscevich, John Heisler (Donna), Lauren Ratkus (Sean), Brooke Heisler (Dillon), Chelsea Zimmer (Ted), Lindsay Weeast, and Veronica Ditto (Joe). She was also blessed with fourteen great-grandchildren: Audio, Cole, Leah, Quinn, Eli, Danilyn, Jack, Max, Sam, Calvin, Arthur, Theo, Eloise, and Valentino.

A registered nurse, Roberta devoted 25 years to Allegheny Valley School, where she cared for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Her service to others extended well beyond her career -- she was a long-time volunteer for Meals on Wheels, bringing not just meals but kindness and comfort to those she served. She had a love for travel and a talent for crochet and knitting, creating countless blankets for Project Linus to warm premature babies and children in need.

She was known for her kindness and generosity -- always the first to extend a helping hand, stay a little longer, and do a little more for anyone who could benefit from her time. She had a rare gift for making people feel seen, heard, and cared for. After meeting her, people often walked away feeling as if the world was just a little bit brighter than it had been before. Her legacy of love, compassion, and quiet strength will live on in the many lives she touched.

Family and friends are welcome to gather at Schepner-McDermott Funeral Home, 165 Noble Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15205, on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Funeral prayer Thursday, August 14, 2025, at 11:15 AM at the funeral home followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00 p.m. in St. Philip Catholic Church, 50 W. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Merakey Allegheny Valley School (1992 Ewings Mill Road, Coraopolis, PA 15108) or St. Philip Catholic Church, Crafton, PA.

Dear Mary & Clayton family clan,

My deepest sympathy and love. I've know Mrs. Clayton since I was in 1st Grade at St. Phillips School , where I met my best friend Mary Lou. I spent many days and nights at your family home in Crafton growing up. Your amazing mother was a second mom to me. I'll never forget the great times we spent at your camp in Elm Grove, sleeping in the very cool school bus and floating in the river where we swam , played and even took our bath with the bar of soap! What a wonderful, kind , smart and strong woman she was. She did and always will hold a special place in my heart.

The picture I found is my mother Betty and Mrs. Clayton holding my son Justin and Mary's daughter Chelsea. 1990

Peace on the Journey
