Roberta Scaia Obituary

Visit the Cook Funeral Home - Torrington website to view the full obituary.

Roberta L. Scaia, 79, of Torrington, Connecticut, a beloved educator, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2026, at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital surrounded by the love of her family. Born on December 17, 1946, in Torrington, she was the daughter of the late Geno and Mollie (Silano) Scaia.

She graduated from Torrington High School, Class of 1964, and went on to earn her BS and MS degrees in Business Education from Central Connecticut State College. While at Central, she pledged sisterhood with Gamma Sigma Sigma.

Roberta dedicated 35 years to teaching at The Gilbert School in Winsted, CT, where she was a business teacher and the Business Department Chair. She also taught evening business classes at Tunxis Community College. After retiring from teaching, she managed the Thrift Shop at the Sullivan Senior Center, volunteered at the Charlotte Hungerford Hospital Gift Shop and enjoyed working at a boutique.

A devout Catholic and communicant of St. Peter Church (St. John Paul the Great Parish), Roberta remained active in parish activities and functions. Generous with her caring for family and friends, she always remembered those homebound or ill with thoughtful gifts, visits, and prayers.

Roberta loved her volleyball and cross-country skiing days, traveling, and continued her daily walks. She looked forward to gatherings with friends and family.

She will be deeply missed by her life partner, Michael Conway of Plymouth, CT; her sister, Mary J. Scaia of Torrington, CT; and her brother, Bill Scaia and his wife Louise of Simsbury, CT. She is also survived by her niece, Jennifer Scaia; her nephew and godson, Christopher Scaia; and several cousins and long-time friends.

Roberta’s family would like to express their gratitude to the 5th floor nursing staff at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital and to the Visiting Nurses & Hospice of Litchfield County for their professional, attentive, and compassionate care.

Visitation will be on Thursday, February 12, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Friday morning, February 13, 2026, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Cook Funeral Home, 82 Litchfield Street, Torrington, CT. The cortege will leave on Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. from Cook Funeral Home to St. Peter Church (St. John Paul the Great Parish), 99 East Main Street, Torrington for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Francis New Cemetery, 863 South Main Street, Torrington.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution to a foundation that Roberta supported, Tunnel to Towers Foundation (www.t2t.org).
