Rodney J. Harris, age 83, was released from his earthly afflictions and passed peacefully from this life in St. George, Utah, where he had resided for the past three years.

Rodney was born on New Year’s Day, January 1, 1942, in Farmington, New Mexico, to Raymond Henry Harris and Fern Gallagher. The youngest of the family, Rodney’s entry into the world was memorable—his mother often recounted his difficult sideways birth, one leg and one arm first, and that the nurse that helped deliver him joked that he should be named “Wrong Way Corrigan.”

Rodney spent the first months of his life in Beclabito, New Mexico, on the Navajo Reservation where his parents managed a trading post. The family then moved to Glendale, California, while his father worked for Lockheed during WWII. Later, they relocated briefly to Cortez, Colorado, and eventually settled in Kirtland, New Mexico when Rodney was in the sixth grade. Kirtland would remain his beloved hometown for most of his life.

Rodney thrived in Kirtland. He was well known for his athleticism and leadership at Kirtland Central High School, where he graduated in 1959. He was a multi-sport athlete, playing football, basketball, and participating in track. His football team won the state championship his senior year, and his basketball team also competed at state. He sang in a trio with close friends, favoring Kingston Trio songs, and was involved in student government and FFA. He was voted “Best Line,” “Best Citizen,” “Homecoming King,” and “Mr. CHS.”

Rodney attended BYU for a year before serving in the U.S. Army Reserve at Fort Knox. He later chose to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in New Zealand, which became one of the most meaningful experiences of his life. There he developed a love for the Polynesian people and culture, learned to play the ukulele, and often blessed his family and friends with song throughout his life. His musical gift and love for the ukulele have been passed on to his grandchildren, many of whom continue his legacy.

After returning from his mission, Rodney resumed his studies at BYU, where he earned a degree in sociology and, more importantly, met his sweetheart, Colleen Cornelius. They were married and sealed in the Oakland, California temple on June 2, 1966.

Rodney and Colleen briefly lived in Newcomb and Shiprock New Mexico as he started his middle school teaching career before returning home to Kirtland. During this time, they welcomed three children: Garth, Angie, and Julie. While Rodney faced lifelong challenges with mental illness that impacted his career, he remained a dedicated father and husband. He later worked alongside his parents at their store, F&S Traders, where he made lasting memories with his children and where they began learning of the value of work and service.

Rodney was a devout and faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in which he served various callings including Sunday School teacher, stake missionary, and served as a member of the high council. His family enjoyed watching and hearing him perform in various church musical performances, but most times just in his home. He shared his testimony through word, but mostly by song. Music gave much comfort and joy to his life. Quiet by nature, Rodney was known for his wisdom, his unwavering kindness, and his deep love for the Savior. He was a peacemaker who never spoke ill of others and left a legacy of quiet strength and enduring faith.

Rodney is survived by his devoted wife, Colleen; his children Garth (Becky), Angie (Stephen), and Julie (Derek); 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Fern; his brother, Keith Harris; and his sister, Marvene Blair.

Rodney's family expresses their deep gratitude for his resilience in the face of adversity. His life was a testament to perseverance, love, and faith. Though his path was not always easy, his decision to remain present and faithful brought immeasurable blessings to those who knew and loved him.

He will be remembered as a gentle soul, a lover of music, a faithful disciple of Christ, and a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
