Cumberland, MD-Roger Clayton Abe, Sr., 85, of
Cumberland, MD, passed away suddenly on Thursday, October 2, 2025 at his home.
Born September 5, 1940 in
Cumberland, MD, Mr. Abe was the son of the late Clayton Abe and Bernice K. (Buckley) Abe. He was also preceded in death by a son: Robert Kyle Abe; his brothers and a sister; and was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Roger was a graduate of Fort Hill High School Class of 1958 and also graduated from Allegany College of Maryland with a degree in criminal justice. He was a proud military Veteran retiring from the United States Air Force with 29 years of service where he held the rank of MSgt. He then worked and retired as a Lieutenant in 2003, from the Allegany County Sheriff's Department with 26 years of service.
Roger was a member of Our Lady of the Mountains Parish, where he and his wife, Marianne, were very active counting money, serving at the food bank, cleaning at the Church of St. Patrick, and always helping at the annual remembrance ceremony at St. Mary's. A thanks to Father Greg Chervenak for allowing them to be a part of the group for several years. He was a life member of EANGUS and a member of the Knight of Columbus, Frostburg, MD where he enjoyed playing cards with his friends. He loved watching football and was an avid Maryland Terrapins fan. He also enjoyed watching War movies. Roger enjoyed taking care of the birds, and watching and feeding all of nature's animals. He was an amazing husband and father and will be deeply missed.
Roger is survived by his wife of 35 years: Marianne Zizza-Abe; his sons: Roger C. Abe, Jr and wife Sherry; Mark Abe and wife Jaymee; and Scott Abe and wife Pam; his daughter: Emily Zizza. He was a grandfather and great-grandfather to many, and he was blessed with a special granddaughter and her family whom held a special place in his heart: Marissa Abe Brinkley and husband Wyatt; and their children: Aubrey and Garrett. He is also survived by a special canine companion: Harriet; and numerous nieces nephews; a close childhood friend: Frank Shambaugh; his lunch buddies and friends: Jim and Ginny Carr; and Pam and Bill Raymond; as well as the friends and staff at D'Atri's and Our Lady of the Mountains Parish.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Mountains Parish, St. Mary's Catholic Church, 300 E. Oldtown Road,
Cumberland, MD 21502 on Monday, October 6, 2025 at 11:00 A.M. with Father Mark Carter, OFM Cap, as celebrant.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the Andrews Air Force Honor Guard.
