Roger Dale Cooper

Roger Dale Cooper left this world on October 19, 2025, on what would have been his 81st birthday. Born in Otter Tail County on October 19, 1944, Roger was the third of seven children in the family of John and Dorothy (Pargman) Cooper. Growing up on a family farm in rural Wendell, MN, he learned the values of hard work and perseverance early on, stepping up to run the farm at just 15 years old due to his father's illness.

In a beautiful partnership, Roger was united in marriage to Ruth McRoberts on June 19, 1965, in Herman, MN. The couple moved to Barnesville, MN, in 1969 when the Minnesota Department of Transportation established the Barnesville station following the construction of the interstate. Roger devoted 32 years of his professional life to the Minnesota DOT, contributing to the community in which he lived.

Roger's sense of duty extended beyond his career. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, participating in two tours in Vietnam, where he welcomed the birth of their first child, Randall. Upon returning home, his daughter Rachelle would grace the family. Roger continued his military service with the Happy Hooligans in the North Dakota Air National Guard, amassing a total of 37 years of dedicated service to his country.

Family was Roger’s everything. He was there for the band concerts, choir concerts, plays, and taking the grandkids to school everyday. He spent countless hours at the lake pulling around the zip sled or in the boat finding the perfect fishing hole. He looked forward to the fishing trips to Lake of the Woods with Randy, and they would always come home with great twisted tales of their adventures.

Roger was a testament to community involvement, engaging actively in various local endeavors. He was a devoted member of St. James United Church of Christ, where he served in numerous capacities. His passion for youth development was evident as he contributed to the Boy Scout program, particularly enjoying moments like the pinewood derby. Additionally, he dedicated eight years to the Barnesville City Council and served for 24 years on the Barnesville Volunteer Fire Department, always answering the call to serve.

An accomplished woodworker, Roger channeled his creativity into building their home and crafting unique wood projects, which he often sold at craft shows. He also took joy in weaving beautiful rugs on a loom, reflecting his dedication to his hobbies and craftsmanship.

The essence of Roger Dale Cooper's life was rooted in service, love, and a commitment to his community and family. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

He is survived by his wife Ruth, two children: Randall (Judy) Cooper, Rachelle (Abraham Avila) Armstrong, grandchildren: Lisette (Troy) Richie, Gabriella (John Krejchik) Armstrong, Timothy Armstrong, five siblings: Janet (Bill) Lacey, Shirley (Richard) Perry, Sharon Foss, John (Molly) Cooper Jr., DeAnn (Jimmie) Anderson, sister in law: Georgia Cooper, and several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents John and Dorothy Cooper, one brother Donald Cooper, and one brother in law: Lyle Foss. Roger Cooper, age 81, of Barnesville, MN, died in his home on Sunday, October 19, 2025, under the care of HIA Hospice.

Memorial Services will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, November 1, 2025, at St. James United Church of Christ with Rev. John Werner officiating. Visitation will start one hour prior to the service.
