Roger Frederic Makin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 5, 2025.
Roger Makin, 73, passed away in May, 2025. Born in Hobbs, New Mexico, in 1952, Roger lived a life marked by intellectual curiosity, creativity, and meaningful relationships. He resided in multiple cities throughout his life, including Albuquerque, Austin, St. Petersburg, San Francisco, and Santa Fe.

A graduate of the University of New Mexico and UT-Austin, Roger served as editor of The Lobo, where he developed his skills as a writer, editor, and photographer. In his professional career, he held roles in journalism and public service, including a position as obituary editor for the St. Petersburg Times and later Communications Coordinator for the New Mexico Municipal League.

Known for his wit, sharp intelligence, and distinctive sense of humor, Roger had a rare ability to connect with people from all walks of life. He was voted "Best Dancer" by his high school class, a title that reflected both his charm and his memorable presence. Friends describe him as enigmatic, fiercely loyal, and endlessly entertaining-someone who could tell a story that left listeners laughing or in tears, often both.

Though private in many ways, Roger made a lasting impression on all who knew him. He is remembered for his generosity of spirit, his storytelling, and his deep love for friends, family, and the places he called home.

He is survived by those whose lives he touched deeply. A private celebration of his life was recently held in Santa Fe. In Roger's memory, his friends and loved ones invite others to honor him in the way he lived-by sharing a good story, laughing loudly, or simply spending time with those who matter most.
