Celebration of life for Roger Wayne McMurry, a devoted stay-at-home parent who ignited a love of learning and inspired us to learn the art of storytelling.

He was born November 5th in Ironton, Missouri, and passed away July 29th at Jackson Manor.

He met Marguerite Lee at a church retreat in Bolivar, Missouri, while they were attending college. They got married nearly 42 years ago in Piedmont, Missouri, and raised two daughters in Cape Girardeau.

Growing up, he exemplified humility, resilience, and unconditional love, teaching these virtues graciously. He attended many of our life events, especially those involving music. In high school, he played the tuba and sang in choir at Piedmont High. He even played for a time in the Golden Eagles Marching Band and sang in the college choir at Southeast University. He was known to add his robust baritone voice in song at Jackson Manor, where he resided for the last two years. As a passionate historian, he volunteered at the Red House Interpretive Center in Cape, kindling curiosity in all who met him. He was a member of the Zion River brigade, formerly a group of reenactors who met at the Missouri Conservation Office in Cape Girardeau, and for a time he served as their librarian. His creative spirit shone brightly through blacksmithing and sewing crafts, while his patience and guidance taught us the joys of cooking, gardening, and sewing, helping us discover our passions. His love of reading, especially historical accounts, sparked meaningful conversations and deepened our appreciation for the past.

He is preceded in passing by his parents, Roy Edward Sr. & Francis Louise (Tucker) McMurry, his brother Roy Edward Jr. McMurry, and grandson Liam W. Patrick.

He is survived by his wife Marguerite (Lee) McMurry, sister Marlyn Sue, daughters Megan (Doug) Patrick, Holly (Chris) Perry and Grandsons Oliver Perry, Logan Perry, Declan Patrick, and Mason Perry. And many nieces and nephews.

A cherished Bible verse, Psalms 119, reflected his commitment to faith and wisdom. Despite health issues, he remained hopeful, even-tempered, and steadfast, inspiring us to persevere. Remember this phrase reminiscent of grace, a quiet, gentle touch, love flows, a soft, sweet easing, Hearts find their true peace.

A memorial visitation will be from 1 p.m. until service time on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.

The Rev. Ron McAtee will conduct the memorial service at 2 p.m., on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at the funeral home.

The family suggests that contributions be made to St. Louis Children's Hospital or Cardinal Glennon.
