Roger Lee "Skeeby" Robinson
Roger Lee Robinson was the fifth of twelve children born to Catherine "Big Mama" Starks and Andrew "Dee" Robinson. He was born on October 8, 1944, and passed gently in his sleep to Our Lord and Savior on September 22, 2024, after a lengthy illness.
He was born in Middleburg, VA, where he lived most of his early life. He was always a loving son, a loyal brother, a loving husband, and devoted father.
He attended Banneker Elementary and Douglas HS. He was a star player on the championship basketball team and graduated in 1964.
To family and friends, he was known by many nicknames, among them: Meany, Skeeby, Snake, and Weeb.
Roger remained in Loudoun County his entire life. He married Merley Turner in 1975. That same year they bought a house on Catoctin Circle and made it their lifelong home.
They raised four children: Don, Denene Robinson Rinehart, Darwin and Rodney Robinson.
Roger had only one employer during his working life, Safeway of Middleburg. He started just after high school, initially part time sweeping and carrying customers' groceries and later became the Night Stock Manager. After 40 years of service, he retired in 2007. He received corporate recognition for his long-dedicated service.
Over the years his hobbies included horseshoes, motorcycling, a fast Z-28 Camaro, pick-up basketball, tennis, landscaping, and watching sports on TV. He was an avid fan of the Washington Redskins/Commanders. In recent years he had a love for the daytime soap operas which he enjoyed watching with his wife!
He was preceded in death by two sisters; Mary "Pie" Bridget, Gladys "Nate" Gibson and two brothers, Ray "Cut" Robinson and Richard "Bugs" Robinson.
He is survived by his wife Merley, daughter Denene (Edward Rinehart, Jr) of Ashburn, VA, sons Don (Liz-Deceased) of Gore, VA, Darwin of Allen, TX and Rodney of Leesburg, VA, sisters Betty Ann Nelson, Karen Payne and Rose Robinson, all of Berryville, VA, Peggy Roberts of Leesburg, VA, Tina Wallace of Middleburg, VA, brothers Francis of Culpeper, VA and Arthur of Burke, VA, 3 Grandchildren, Edward Rinehart III (Kaleigh) of Richmond, VA, Jade Rinehart McLaughlin (Jonathan) of Charlotte, NC, and Devon Kaplan (Sara), and 2 Great Grandchildren, Elise and Jameson Kaplan of Gainesville, VA.
In addition, he will be mourned by six brothers-in-law, two sisters-in-law, many cousins, nieces, nephews, and an untold number of lifelong friends.
Roger was a family man, dedicated to his children, loyal to his wife of 50 years, and very proud of all their accomplishments. He will be remembered as easy going, kind, and generous. Rather than seeking the spotlight, he gave off his own light and brightened everyone and everything around him. We are all blessed to have had Roger in our lives.
A Celebration of Life will be Saturday, October 5, 2024, at 12:00pm at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, 1175 Delaplane Grade Road, Upperville, Virginia with Pastor Phillip Lewis officiating.
Viewing will be at 11:00 am at the church.
In lieu of flowers, kindly consider making a donation to Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, 1175 Delaplane Grade Road, Upperville, Va. 20184.
Interment will be in West View Cemetery in Upperville, Virginia.
