Roger Schaaf Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Klecatsky & Sons Funeral Homes - Eagan Chapel on Mar. 11, 2026.
Roger Arlen Schaaf was given life by his creator and was born on October 17, 1931, the child of Virgil and Gladys (Solem) Schaaf. On December 20, 1931 he received the gift of Holy Baptism and became a child of God. On May 20, 1945, he publicly confessed his faith and was confirmed. On November 26, 1955, he received the gift of a beloved companion in his spouse, Lois Wateland. He was blessed with the gift of children Jeffery, Roxanne, Patti, Michelle and Jennifer. Finally, on March 7, 2026 God blessed Roger with a holy death and took him home to rest in the arms of Jesus to await the resurrection of the dead.

Roger lived in Eau Claire, WI until the age of 10. His family then moved to St. Paul. He graduated from Central High School in 1949. He joined the Air Force in 1951. After serving four years, he returned to St. Paul and met Lois Wateland. They were married November 26, 1955. Roger than served another four years in the Air Force. After the service he began working for his dad at Virgil D Schaaf Construction. He and his siblings took over the business, and he worked there until his retirement at age 62.

Roger was very proud of his family, his military service and his garden. Roger and Lois were married for 70 years. In addition to their five children, they were blessed with thirteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Their house was the gathering place for holidays, lefse making and playing games. Roger had an amazing garden where he grew everything from strawberries and grapes to popcorn and pumpkins. He loved to spend time in the garden, and it was admired by all that passed by. In addition to gardening, Roger liked to bike, cross country ski and travel.

Roger loved his family and we loved him. We will miss him, but we rejoice knowing he had a full and wonderful life. We lean on God's promise of eternal life and look forward to seeing him again in heaven.

I admire his talent and dedication for gardening. His vegetables always grew in perfectly straight rows-- I don't know how he did it. My favorite time of year was April when hundreds of Red and Yellow tulips filled the garden. Gorgeous.

I made the mistake of bicycling on the Cannon Valley Trail with Roger and Vernon once. Roger was oldest and well into his 70s, but he was fast. He raced ahead of us. Huffing and puffing, we finally caught up with him a few miles later where Roger was waiting for us. When we finally reached him, he sprinted off again and left us in the dust. I was exhausted by the end of the day.

Roger will be dearly missed by everyone in our family. He was one of a kind.
