Roger William Tumbleson, a cherished pillar of his community and beacon of love to his family, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2024, at the age of 76, in
Niles, Michigan. Born on May 25, 1948, in Dowagiac, Michigan, Roger was a man whose life was characterized by selflessness, gentleness, and a loving spirit that touched all who knew him.
Roger was the son of the late William and Ilah (Reynolds) Tumbleson and grew up alongside his brothers, Larry (Debbie) and Alan (Jan), in the close-knit community that would shape his unwavering values and commitment to family. After bravely serving his country during the Vietnam Conflict in the Army, Roger returned home to build a life centered around love, diligence, and faith.
It was his beloved wife, Marie (Dohm) Tumbleson, who stood by his side in a marriage that was a testament to devotion and partnership. Together, they raised three wonderful children-Kerry, Kelly (Chad), and Roger Jr. (Valerie)-instilling in them the significance of family, hard work, and compassion. Roger's role as 'Papa' to his six grandchildren was one he embraced with every ounce of his being, always ensuring they felt the depth of his love and the joy of his presence.
Professionally, Roger dedicated many years as a Plant Manager in the Agriculture sector, where his leadership was both respected and admired. His tireless work ethic was only matched by his commitment to community service, as exemplified by his impactful tenure as the Bertrand Fire Department Chief. Roger's ability to lead with both strength and empathy made him a respected figure both at work and within the community.
He attended the Redeemer Church, Roger's faith was a cornerstone of his life. He lived by the well-known adage, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you," a principle that guided his every action and interaction. His faith was not only expressed through his involvement with the church but also through the daily example he set for those around him.
Roger's interests were a reflection of his love for the outdoors and the simple pleasures of life. An avid fisherman and skilled deer hunter, he found serenity in the quiet moments spent in nature. He was an excellent provider, ensuring his family never went without, and his joy was most palpable when camping with his loved ones, where stories, laughter, and memories were shared around the campfire.
Family was always first for Roger, a fact that was evident to anyone who had the pleasure of spending time with him. His ability to prioritize the needs of his loved ones over his own, without a second thought, was the hallmark of his character. Roger's legacy as a gentle, loving, and selfless man will live on through the lives he shaped and the community he helped to build.
In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, "To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." Roger's life was indeed a resounding success, measured not in material accomplishments but in the love he gave and the lives he bettered.
In keeping with Roger's wishes, cremation has taken place and his family will be remembering him privately.
