He enjoyed driving, taking care of his truck, taking his children along on the many trips hauling grain from the Dakota's and Montana; hauling supplies for the pipeline to Alaska; and the many trips across Canada hauling produce to Prince Albert and Saskatoon. He also enjoyed building his own home where they lived for nearly 70 years, enjoyed gardening, his children and especially his wife of 73 years.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Raymond (Gertrude) Wagner of Hermantown, and Wilmer "Bud" (Evelyn) Wagner of Hermantown; sister, Arlene (Pat) Conley of Plano, Texas; and son-in-law, Dean of Duluth.

Joan and Roger had five children, Cheryl (Dean) Bloomquist of Duluth, David (Shari) of Laurel, Maryland, Bruce (Shelley) of Menomonie, Wisconsin, Steven (Gloria) of Hermantown, and Lorie (Doug) Bauer of Brighton, Colorado; grandchildren, Sarah (Jason) Nickel of Andover, Minnesota, Katie (Jeremy) Lunke of Rosemount, Minnesota, Karl (Danielle Rhoades) Wagner of Duluth, and Hollie (Anthony) Nielsen of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; and 7 great-grandchildren.
