Roger Wells Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Pierschbacher Funeral Homes - Chariton on Jan. 5, 2026.
A celebration of life for Roger Wells, 96, of Plano, will be held at a later date with times to be determined. Roger passed away on December 30th, 2025, surrounded by his family at Lucas County Health Center. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Seymour Public Library. Roger was born on August 29, 1929, to Rex and Ruby (Bear) on the family farm in Iowa. In his younger years, Roger attended Jones Country School through eighth grade and later went to Centerville High School, where he graduated in 1947. While in high school, Roger spent his weekdays in a boarding house and also participated in track and football. A year after graduation, Roger served in the Air Force from November 1948 until September 1952. Roger spent the majority of his time at Ramey Air Force Base in Puerto Rico. He was proudly a Senior Control Tower Operator, achieving the rank of Sergeant. When Roger came back home, his farming career began with his father, Rex, in 1952. His brother Clive joined the operation when he also returned from the service. Roger and Clive had a decades-long row crop and hay partnership until Roger proudly retired in his early 80's. Roger ceased beef cattle farming at eighty years old. He raised hogs and worked with dairy cows in his early years. On January 29, 1956, Roger and Norma (Peterson) were wed at Immanuel United Methodist Church in Des Moines, Iowa. The two spent just shy of 70 years together, creating and raising a wonderful family. Roger always enjoyed sports, participating and watching his kids, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He rooted for the Iowa teams, especially the Hawkeyes and Cyclones, and cheered for the underdog when they played against each other. Roger really liked to watch the St. Louis Cardinals and the Packers, and he never forgot the Boston Celtics' glory years. An avid reader, Roger, was known for reading a book in a single setting. More recently in his lifetime, reading books was his favorite hobby. Throughout his life and in earlier years, Roger was a trustee of John's Township as well as the assessor and was on the Appanoose County Soil Conservation Board. The Plano Christian Church was blessed to have him as a long-time member of their church and serving as an elder. He is survived by his wife, Norma D. Wells, daughters Nina Wells of Plano, Marian (Matt) Wade of Seymour, son Terry Wells (Kelly Marinin) of Des Moines and four grandchildren: Krista (Jeff) Tuttle, Tim (Alisha) Wells, Ashley (Nate) Daniel and Kaylee Horman, Step-grandchildren: Chloe and Brandon Wade, Great-grandchildren Brody and Addison Tuttle, Atlas Daniel and Scarlett Wells, Brother-in-law Max (Sandra) Peterson Sister-in-law Marilyn (Richard) Gordon and many nieces and nephews. Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Rex and Ruby; stepmother, Ethel Wells; brother, Clive Wells; sisters, Leone Irwin, Lila Haines, and Dixie Millizer; and stepsisters, Geraldine Fadiga, Gretchen Fadiga, Donna Davis, and Eleanor Jones. Brother-in-Law Rex (Betty) Peterson, Sister-in-Law Ruth Deloris (Ray F.) Jones. To send flowers to the family of Roger, please visit our floral store.
