Roger West Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Nilson-Millard Cremation and Burial Center - Columbia on Dec. 31, 2025.
Roger Eugene West, age 81, was born on September 20, 1944, to Willie S. and Nellie Houston West. He was the youngest of thirteen children, all of whom preceded him in death. Roger spent his early years in a large, loving family that shaped his values and character.
Roger married Della Creason in Columbia, Missouri, on June 16, 1967. Their devoted partnership lasted 58 years. Together, they raised Della's four daughters, Diana Forbis (Steve), Angie Lashley (John), Lisa Long, Mary Acton Dungan (Kurt), and one son, Raymond West (Emily). Roger considered them all his children, never using the term "step." They had eight grandchildren, including one they raised from infancy, Justin Long, Kentucka Harrison, Matthew Gilpin, Abigail West, Sam West, Hunter Acton, Joe West, and Brady West. He is also survived by three great grandchildren, Connor Long, Eleanor Countryman, and Harper Countryman, along with many nieces and nephews.
Roger dedicated 26 years of his professional life to the Ameren Gas Division, where he worked diligently and retired as a Foreman in 2003. His reliability and strong work ethic earned him the respect of colleagues throughout his career.
Roger was an active member of Hallsville 4 H, where he contributed his time and expertise to the local community. He served for many years as a judge for rabbits at Hallsville Heritage Days and later expanded his role to judging chickens. Roger took great joy in teaching children about animals and poultry, sharing his knowledge and inspiring a love for learning in younger generations. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie 2730.
Roger's true passion was raising goats. He began with pygmy goats, which he bred and cared for over a span of 15 years. Later, he discovered fainting goats and quickly became enamored with their unique charm, often spending hours simply watching them. Among his herd, one white goat named Nan held a special place in Roger's heart. Nan produced many offspring, typically twins or triplets, and once delivered quadruplets.
Visitation will be held at Nilson Funeral Home on January 5 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., with services to follow at noon. Services will be conducted by Roger's nephew, Richard West. Burial will take place at Memorial Cemetery after the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hallsville 4-H Club in care of Elaine George.

He was a good man. He took good care of Della and the girls and was admired for that. He will be missed.
