Romeo "Rome" Olivarez Obituary

Visit the Memorial Redwood Mortuary & Cemetery - West Jordan website to view the full obituary.

Romeo “Rome” Olivarez, age 79, passed away on October 24, 2025, in Draper, Utah. He was born on March 3, 1946, in McCallen, Texas. Romeo loved a life defined by hard work, quiet strength, and unwavering loyalty to those he cared about.

Romeo built a long and respected career as a Drill and Blast Foreman at Kennecott Copper Mine. For decades, he took immense pride in his work – “blowing up the mountain” as he would often refer to it, as he beamed with pride. His dedication was unmatched, going years without missing a single day of work. Working at the mine was his glory days! Years filled with purpose and camaraderie. Recounting his time at Kennecott would always bring him the biggest smile from ear to ear!

After retiring from Kennecott, Romeo continued his professional journey at Flying J Oil Refinery as a lab technician. There, too, he formed lasting friendships and earned the respect of colleagues who became lifelong friends.

Romeo was a praying man who loved God and had undying faith, commitment, and loyalty to the Lord. Always reminding loved ones not to worry, and instead to pray.

Romeo had passions that brought him joy. He was an avid pool player and participated in numerous leagues throughout his life, most notably through Old Towne Tavern. He also loved poker and spent many hours at the table enjoying the game's strategy and thrill. Bowling was another favorite pastime. Romeo had a stoic presence-often perceived as intimidating those who truly knew him understood that beneath that exterior was one of the most generous and helpful souls you could ever meet. He carried himself with dignity and nobility!

Romeo was a devoted Dallas Cowboys Fan through thick and thin, regardless of how frustrated he might get with them, “Demz were his boys!” No matter what!

Rome’s family wishes to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at Valencia at Draper, whose unwavering care and kindness provided comfort and dignity throughout his final chapter. We are also deeply thankful to Active Hospice, whose gentle support and expertise guided us through this journey with grace. We are forever grateful for the love and care shown by both teams.

Romeo is lovingly remembered by his children, Theresa Olivarez, Elizabeth Ferguson-Olivarez (Pat Ferguson); and Sarah Ortiz. He is also survived by his brother, Ruben Olivarez. Six grandchildren: Johnny Vigil, D’Angelo Peguese, Laurence Valles, Melissa Lopez, Jesica Valles Maldonado, and Rebecca Tiscareno. And 12 great-grandchildren, as well as his special, unwavering friend Ruth.

He now joins in rest his beloved son Romeo J Olivarez III; his parents Romeo Olivarez and Elida Maldonado; and siblings Oscar Olivarez, Raul Olivarez, Rene Olivarez, and Esmeralda Romero.

May the memory of Romeo bring comfort to all who knew him, and may we carry forward the strength, loyalty, and quiet generosity that defined his remarkable life
