Ronald Alson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Jackson Funeral Chapel of Rensselaer on Feb. 12, 2026.
Ronald Ray Alson, age 72, of Rensselaer, Indiana, passed away peacefully at home, after a three-year battle with cancer on February 11, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on October 17, 1953, in Rensselaer to Raymond and Ellen "Lucille" (nee Ritter) Alson, Ron was a lifelong resident and a proud 1971 graduate of Rensselaer Central High School. His deep roots in the community began in childhood, when he would often ride his bike to watch the Chicago Bears practice during their training camps at Saint Joseph's College. On June 10, 1977, he married his soulmate, Mary Piatt, beginning a beautiful 48-year journey together.

Ron was a dedicated heavy machine operator for IUOE Local 150 for over three decades, earning a lifetime membership for his service. After retirement he dedicated his time to help Fenwick Farms. Beyond his career, Ron was a cornerstone of local youth sports. He didn't just coach games; he helped children grow and learn, using the field and court to teach invaluable life lessons about teamwork and character. While he enjoyed traveling the world with Mary, his favorite destinations were wherever his grandchildren were. He was their biggest fan, traveling near and far to support them in all their endeavors.

A passionate sports fan, Ron spent his free time on the golf course or cheering for the IU Hoosiers, the Chicago Bears, and the White Sox. One of the absolute highlights of his life was attending a game during the 2005 White Sox World Series championship run.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Mary; his children, Megan (John) McDonnell of Colorado Springs, CO, and Garrett (Ashley) Alson of Heath, TX; and his four cherished grandchildren, Kyle, Jake, Izzy, and Drew. He also leaves behind his brothers, Craig (Mona) Alson of Florida and Brad (Kim) Alson of Rensselaer. Cherished bonus son Jatin (Shreya) Patel, and bonus grandchildren Shay and Tayven. Ron was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Fred Alson.

The Alson family would like a special thank you to the Franciscan Health Oncology Department.

Memorial Contributions may me made to the Rensselaer Central High School Baseball Lighting Fund.

A celebration of life will be held on a later date, Jackson Funeral Chapel is entrusted with the arrangements.
