Ronald Irwin Ault, a beloved father, partner, and esteemed member of the diving community, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2025, in Olympia, Washington, at the age of 81. Born on November 8, 1943, in Baird, Texas, Ron was a man of extraordinary character and many adventures.
Ron's journey began in the United States Navy, where he served as a boatswain's mate for three tours in Vietnam. His dedication and skill led him to complete first-class divingschool, becoming part of an elite group within the Experimental Diving Unit. It was during his time stationed in Bremerton, Washington, where he met his wife, Lea Ann Bodin, and they married in 1965, forging a bond that would shape much of his early life.
After his naval service, Ron's career took an unconventional turn, allowing him to embrace his passion for diving. He became a diving professional, working in the sewers of New York-a job he humorously referred to as "crappy" yet rewarding. Subsequently, he returned to Washington, where he established himself as a search and rescue diver and deep-sea seafood diver. His entrepreneurial spirit led to the opening of the Hoodsport 'n Dive, where he not only ran the business but also passionately instructed aspiring divers from all corners of the globe.
Ron was known not just for his achievements but for the vibrant personality he brought into the lives of those around him. He was a well-respected figure in the diving community, featured in dive magazines and on the show "River Monsters." His friendships ranged from celebrated authors like Frank Herbert to those he met on the streets, reflecting his considerate and honest nature. Ron was a man who embraced life's adventures-whether skydiving, motorcycling, hiking, or even crafting his own gyrocopter; he was always ready for the next thrill.
He is preceded in death by his father, Charles Preston Ault; mother, Lyndal Mae Irwin; and Brothers Charles Preston Jr, Cleveland Judson, Jackie Neal, and Jimmy Lynn. He is survived by Barbara Jean Singleton, his long-time partner; Lea Ann, his former spouse and friend; daughters Rhonda Adkins and Stephanie Ault; sister Lou Ann Barnes; grandchildren Leah Hortin, Ash Ault, Ryan Hainey; and great-grandchild Graham Hainey.
In his passing, Ron leaves behind a legacy of adventure, kindness, and a profound impaction all who knew him. A ceremony honoring his life will be determined at a later date, information that will be shared with loved ones to celebrate the incredible spirit that was Ron Ault. To know Ron was to know a man who lived life fully and loved deeply, and he will be sorely missed by all.
