Ronald Alan Bates, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2024, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma,
at the age of 85. Born on June 2, 1938, Ron lived a life marked by dedication,
determination, and keen intellect that left a lasting impression on everyone who knew
him.
Ron is survived by Lorraine Hummingbird Bates, his loving wife of 60 years, his
children Stephen Bates and Pamela Bates Walker, his son-in-law, Gary Walker, two
granddaughters, Jessica Walker Spencer and Kristen Walker Kistler, and four greatgrand
children, James, Iris, George and Max.
Ron graduated from Oklahoma State University as a Mechanical Engineer which he put
to use in the U.S. Army. Later, working as an Aeronautical Engineer with the U.S. Air
Force for the remainder of his career.
Ron was described by his son as: "quite a renaissance man", knowledgeable, and
interested a wide range of subjects such as fishing, opera, Cherokee culture, Formula 1
racing, physics, but he found solace in the art of gardening.
Ron's legacy is one of love, service, and dedication. His memory will be cherished as
his absence is deeply felt. We hold tight to our memories of him and the indelible mark
he has left on our hearts.
In lieu flowers, contributions to The Cherokee Elders Council, inc. would be appreciated
as it was his favorite charitable organization.

I send my deepest condolences to Lorraine and family. Ron was always there and willing to help our community whenever there was a need. The thing I will always remember about Ron is when he took it upon himself to replace my brother“s roof.
He was truly one of a kind.
