Ronald Lynn Battani lived a life fueled by passion, perseverance, faith, and the transformative power of music. Born in Vallejo, California, and raised in Woodward, Iowa, Ron was inspired early by his father's Italian dance band and jazz mentors who recognized his talent. Earning a music scholarship to Drake University, he poured his heart into every note-completing both BME and MME degrees while drumming for the Barnum & Bailey Circus and even sleeping in bandstands to afford school.
Over a distinguished 44-year career spanning Iowa, Texas, and Nevada, Ron built award-winning music programs and inspired thousands of students-including his own children. He taught middle, high school and college band, jazz band, and marching band. His bands received national recognition and shared unforgettable moments, including jazz legend Buddy Rich performing with his Hoover High Jazz Band. As a professional percussionist, Ron also played drums for artists like Frank Sinatra Jr., Sonny & Cher, and The Pointer Sisters.
He co-founded the Iowa Jazz Championships, was inducted into the Iowa Jazz Educators Hall of Fame, and has a festival named in his honor. In his final years in Las Vegas, he continued to teach and perform in local symphonies and orchestras, always surrounded by the music he loved. A master musician, devoted father, and compassionate mentor, Ron's legacy lives on in every note played and every life he touched.
