Ronald E. Baum Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2005.
To friends and fellow Marines, Gunnery Sgt. Ronald E. Baum seemed fearless. Facing the conflict in Iraq, he volunteered to go. "He was tough as nails, disciplined, compassionate," said Capt. Michael DuBruel, Baum''s company commander. "Ron lived life to the fullest. He died while leading men in battle." The 38-year-old from Hollidaysburg, Pa., was killed by mortar fire May 3 in Iraq''s Anbar province. He was stationed at Camp Lejeune, N.C. "He gave his life for love of his country, the Marine Corps," said his wife, Cynthia Baum. "If Ron could speak to us today, he would say, ''I am proud to be a husband, father, brother, friend, but above all, proud to be a Marine.''" Baum took part in the evacuation of 172 people in Eritrea during a border dispute with Ethiopia in 1998. He was an instructor at the Naval Survival School in Rangeley, Maine. Survivors include his three children, ages 3, 7 and 10.

I knew Gunnery Sgt Baum when I was just 8 years old. He was a good friend of one of my older brothers and showed up one time on Christmas Eve, to have dinner with my family. Even as a child, I could tell his personality demanded attention, but in a way that said, "you need to listen to this man.. he has knowledge". I am proud to have met him, and to have had a crush on him at that young age! I shared my Christmas sticker book with him, and I remember he had nodded approvingly, amusingly, and said, 'don't ever lose that'. My mother still has the sticker book. I still have the memory.

I know my little story is trite compared to Gunnery Sgt Baum's heroism and blood given for our country, but I felt the need to put my thoughts to words and tell his family, friends, and fellow Marines, the pride I feel to have met him back then.... I witnessed a legendary person. My condolences to all of you who knew him and fought alongside him. Semper Fi!!!

Gunnery Sergeant Baum was leading my son Anthony L. Ferrante, a fellow Marine and others on May 3rd when they came under attack. Anthony was with Gunnery Sergeant Baum when he was killed by mortar fire in the Anbar Province. Anthony recalled Gunny Baum's heroism and fine leadership to me after his return from Iraq. Anthony and I would like to thank Gunny Baum and his family on this Memorial Day for his service and fine leadership. My son and I will always remember him and honor his name and service to the Marine Core. He lead with fierce honor and dignity. Semper Fi.

Hello,
We would like to express our deepest condolences and also let the Baum Family and friends know that we will be sending Care Packages to troops in Afghanistan this week and we'll be dedicating several of these to your loved one. Each package will carry the name, photo and the hometown of Ronald E. Baum US Marine Gunnery Sergeant. We realize that this is a small tribute, but we do this with all respect and sincerity and we want you to know that it is made possible by thousands of like-minded individuals from across the American youth hockey community. We will not forget. May God Bless you and keep you strong.

Ron,

I just wanted people to know that we still think of you. I remember those cookouts in the DLI beer garden. That was a great duty station mostly because of the NCOs. During my time as an NCO, I tried my best to always remember the things you, Gardner, Sig, and Bullard talked about. I always tried to be as good a leader as you guys were. I remember the talk we had when I picked up CPL about what it meant to be a leader. You were the best, and I used a version of that talk with every young NCO I ever served with.

I also remember how proud you were when you picked up SGT. I heard you were a great SNCO as well. No big surprise there. God bless you and your family. I am proud to have served with you.

It is difficult to know what to say since I want to express my sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Gunnery Sgt Baum. Please know that your loved one is not forgotten. I wish everyone impacted by this tragic loss strength and peace. I hope that Gunnery Sgt Baum knew that there are people in America who respect his great courage in serving as a member of the US military. Although I did not know him, I know that he must have been a very special person to be willing to do something that most Americans will never have to experience, and for that we can never say thank you enough.
Thank you Gunnery Sgt Baum!

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers today.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Ronald, but I am remembering on
this day he gave his all.
He is my hero.

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

August 9, 2007

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON (KIA on 07/06/07) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

This is for you Gunny, my Marine Brother. I don't know how it could be said any better than this by William Shakespear.

"Old men forget, but we'll remember what things we did that day. Then shall our names be as household words. This story shall the vereran teach his son, from this day to the ending of the world! But we shall be remembered, We few, we happy few, we band of brothers. For he today that sheds his blood with me shall be my brother.

And men who were not there shall think themselves accursed and hide their heads, whilst any speaks that fought with us, in our noble cause!

God bless you Gunney, and keep those streets up their safe for us when our time comes.

This is from the bible, but I don't remember which chapter;

"No greater love hath man than to lay down his life for another."
