Ronald “Ron” Elwood Gerbig, age 91, of Burke, VA, and formerly of Mechanicsburg, died on, Monday, September 2, 2024. Ron was born on Friday, December 9, 1932, in Chambersburg to the late Robert Elwood Gerbig and Mildred Gladys (Vivian) Gerbig. Ron was the widower of Shirley Marie (Mumma) Gerbig, whom he married on July 2, 1960, and who died on July 12, 1997.
Ron’s survivors include his two children: Lisa Johnson of Burke, VA, William “Bill” Gerbig, and wife, Christine of Harrisburg; his four grandchildren: Rebecca Johnson, William Johnson, Alex Gerbig, and Sarah Gerbig.
Ron graduated from John Harris High School in 1950. He served with the U.S. Army in the Korean War and worked for the Department of Defense until his retirement. He was a huge sports enthusiast, both watching sports and coaching youth throughout his life. His last coaching job was the "grandfather" of CV girls and Capital AAU girls basketball.
All are welcome to join Ron’s family at his celebration of life open house (please wear your favorite team's colors or jersey) on Friday, September 13, 2024, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with a time of remembrance at 12:30 p.m. at Buhrig’s Gathering Place, 25 East Main Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055, (717) 766-3421 (next to Buhrig Funeral & Cremation). Over 100 parking spaces are available; just look for the “Buhrig” parking signs in all of the parking lots.
Interment was private.
