Ronald L. Schmoyer, 76, of Mountain Top, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, Jan. 16, 2026.
Born in Allentown, he was the son of the late Homer L. Schmoyer and Dorothy S. (Reichard) Schmoyer. Ronald was a graduate of Dieruff High School in Allentown and went on to earn his Bachelor of Music Performance and Bachelor of Music Education from the prestigious Philadelphia Musical Academy and a Master of Music Performance and Master of Music Education from Westchester University.
A trumpeter first, Ron played all instruments, performing in various bands and orchestras, including the Northeast Philharmonic. His performing life spanned nearly 60 years, in genres from jazz to polka. However, he focused even more of his professional energy on passing on his love of music to others.
After graduation, he taught music at Father Judge High School and Northeast Catholic in Philadelphia before moving to Northeast Pennsylvania to be the band director at E.L. Meyers High School, where for over 15 years he led the marching and jazz bands to numerous awards and competition trophies, traveling throughout the states, gaining national recognition, even playing once for his beloved Philadelphia Eagles. He then moved onto Kistler Elementary and Heights Murray Elementary and served as the Supervisor of Music for Wilkes-Barre Area School District, until his retirement after 35 years.
Throughout his career, he also taught private music lessons to all sorts of learners, from a young child picking up their first trombone to accomplished players needing a tune-up during Conservatory, making plain to each one that he really could tell if you practiced.
Ron was a devoted member of St. Jude Church, Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA), the National Education Association (NEA), Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR), and the American Federation of Musicians (AFM).
He loved good food, dancing, watching old Western movies, working in his garden, creating water features for his backyard, traveling, spending time with his family, and attending live music performances, often taking time to chat up the band. He was especially fond of Lionel model trains, engineering elaborate displays each holiday season. He was an avid sports fan, proudly supporting the Philadelphia Phillies, Philadelphia Eagles, and Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
In addition to his parents, Ronald was preceded in death by two brothers, Larry Schmoyer and Bruce Schmoyer, and a brother-in-law, John "Pikes" Jablonski.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 and a half years, Barbara (Jablonski) Schmoyer; his son, Kyle Schmoyer of Delanco, N.J.; his daughter, Erin Leigh Schmoyer and her husband, William Schnurr, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; his brother, Jeffrey Schmoyer of Allentown; his brother-in-law, Edward Jablonski of Reading; many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews, as well as a number of loving friends.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 22, from the Desiderio-Lehman Funeral and Cremation, 436 S. Mountain Blvd., Mountain Top, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. Jude Church, Mountain Top.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, and again from 9:30 a.m. to service time Thursday morning.
Ronald will be remembered for his passionate love of music, diligent work ethic, creativity, generosity of spirit, commitment to his students, and unwavering devotion to Barbara, Kyle, and Erin Leigh, of whom he was always proud. He is deeply and forever missed.
Flowers are welcome, and donations can be made in Ronald's memory to the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org.

My condolences to the Schmoyer family. I was a student of Mr. Schmoyer´s at Charles and Mary´s and at DeLuca´s. He touched so many lives and I still look back very fondly on my years of trumpet lessons with him. He will be remembered by many for care and passion for his students.

Tribute to Ron Schmoyer
Meyers High School Band Director
Rest in Peace
Meyers was not just a school. It was a family. For so many of us, that family had a soundtrack, and that soundtrack came from Mr. Ron Schmoyer.
He was more than a band director. He was a mentor, a steady presence, and the heart of the program. He had the ability to take a room full of students and turn it into something unified, disciplined, and full of pride.
Mr. Schmoyer taught us more than music. He taught responsibility, commitment, and the importance of showing up. He showed us how teamwork matters and how confidence grows when someone believes in you.
His patience seemed endless. His expectations were high. Most of all, his belief in his students left a lasting mark. Whether it was band camp, football games, parades, or long rehearsals, he made every moment count.
We did not just lose a teacher. We lost a piece of Meyers history. But his influence lives on in every student who ever picked up an instrument under his direction.
Rest easy, Mr. Schmoyer. Thank you for the music, the lessons, and the time you gave to all of us. Your impact will never be forgotten.
Meyers Mohawks forever.

Mr. Schmoyer was truly one of the greats in music education. I was in the Meyers band(s) for six years from 1975 to 1981 and fondly recall those band days as being the best in my formative years. The discipline I learned from Mr. Schmoyer is priceless. Although I now work in a different profession, Mr. Schmoyer was one of the main influences in me making the decision to become a professional musician and a music teacher. Plus - all the marching he put us through in marching band sure came in handy when I joined the military! The last time I saw Mr. Schmoyer was in about early 1986 when I was doing classroom observation for my music degree. I was always hoping to perhaps run into him again. Requiescat In Pace, Mr. Schmoyer - you will be sorely missed.

Dear Schmoyer family,
May the Good Lord bring peace to you during this time.
As a student of Mr. Schmoyer for many years in the 1990s, I still remember the timeless conversations and lessons that I learned from him at Charles and Mary's. I continue to play trumpet for the Lord and our Veterans and I am thankful for having him as my first trumpet teacher!
Sincerely,
Mike Truszkowski

John and I are so sorry to hear of Ron´s passing. Our heartfelt sympathy to Barbara, Kyle and Erin. Our children were friends at St Jude´s school and Ron gave flute lessons to one of our daughters. Such a nice gentle-man who will be missed greatly by his family and friends.

My most deepest condolences to the family. I am at a loss to fully state just how much of an influence, mentor, inspiration, surrogate parent, friend Ron is and was to so many. His never give up, push til it hurts, you can do and be whatever you want presence touched so many of us then, now, always. We as Mohawks, were so blessed to have the best in faculty, staff, administration that truly cared for all of us. While each of us will have special memories and inspirations we know that a lot of who we are and what we become were shaped by those we spent 6 years with day in and out. I want to thank Ron's family for sharing and sacrificing so we can have the honor and privilege of being shaped, molded, taught and foundation set for life. Theres just so much great and awesome things and relationships developed by being part of Meyers Band. I just spoke to him Jan 7th, his birthday as I would like to wish you the best on his day. Who can forget waking the neighbors at 7am, Burger King after football games, the trips, competitions and spending periods AM, 1st, 3rd, 7th, and 8th periods in our home away from home. The summers where he would volunteer his time to teach music theory and prepare for music school auditions, PMEA events and those extra things we loved doing
Our love for seeing Maynard Ferguson at the Hi Lite in Kingston as a group created bonds and special moments.
He also reminded us to be respectful and getting good grades a must. He reminded me often no matter how big you are a wrestling move brought reality.
Subtly football fields are for bands, and we would allow the football team to borrow as and when we were done!! But you know the bond, respect, and admiration sports teams and music had for each other forged everlasting relationships because the people in charge made us respect and admire each other. Thank you teacher, mentor, and friend for YOU!!!
