Ronald Thompson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Skinner Funeral Home - Eaton Rapids on Feb. 16, 2026.
The Reverend Ronald John "Ron" Thompson passed peacefully on February 14, 2026, at the age of 92. Born June 17, 1933, in Ohio, Ron remained a devoted Ohio State University fan throughout his life, cheering faithfully for the Buckeyes.

Ron was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Hope Dakin, whom he married in July of 1955 and with whom he shared a deep and enduring partnership until her passing in October 2022. Their marriage was a model of commitment, faith, and love.

He is survived by his children Cindy DeBow of Eaton Rapids, MI; Christy Knight of Linden, MI; and Todd Thompson of Charlevoix, MI, along with 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren who carry forward his legacy of faith and family.

Ron served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. After his military service, he pursued his calling to ministry, graduating from Olivet College and later United Theological Seminary. Over 33 years in the United Methodist Church, Ron faithfully served six congregations. Remarkably, each ministry experienced significant growth and renewal under his leadership, including major building projects that strengthened the churches' ability to serve their communities. He was known for leaving every church better than he found it.

A man of deep and abiding faith, Ron viewed family as his highest earthly priority. He was an encourager, a steady presence, a pastor, and a true friend. He loved unconditionally, guided by loyalty and conviction. He was the kind of friend who walked in when the rest of the world walked out.

Ron had a spirit of adventure and is credited within the family for inventing the beloved tradition of the "mystery trip," creating memories that spanned generations. He and Hope rarely missed a chance to support their grandchildren, often driving hours to attend sporting events, concerts, and theater performances. He showed up - faithfully and quietly - never for attention, always out of love.

Those who knew Ron will remember his humility, his curiosity about the world, and yes, his occasional stubborn streak that revealed his passion and resolve.

His legacy lives on through the pillars he cherished most:

Faith, the family cottage, New Year's Eve celebrations, and Simpson Park Camp in Romeo, Michigan.

More than anything, Ron will be remembered for the grace with which he lived and the steady love he gave. His life was a sermon far more powerful than words - one of service, faithfulness, and presence

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, February 18, 2026 at Skinner Funeral Home in Eaton Rapids. The family will receive friends starting at 9:30 AM. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to Simpson Park in Romeo, MI. To share memories or leave online condolences please visit www.SkinnerFuneralHomes.com
