Rose Alter Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Holt Family Funeral Home on Jan. 30, 2026.
Rose Alter, a woman of remarkable strength, a curious traveler, and a gentle friend to nature, passed away on January 14, 2026. Born in Bryan, Texas, on July 2, 1956, to Peter and Nell Tremont, Rose's life was defined by a spirit of adventure and a deep, quiet resilience.

As a military wife, Rose was the steadfast anchor of her family. She navigated the world with grace, embracing the challenges of military life and turning every new corner of the globe into a home. These travels sparked a lifelong passion for exploring and new friendships, though her heart eventually led her back to the rugged beauty of Colorado.

Rose settled in the mountains near Westcliffe, where she found her true sanctuary. She was a woman of the outdoors who loved fishing the Colorado lakes, but she was perhaps best known for the quiet moments she spent on her property. She possessed a rare, gentle patience, often sitting peacefully on her porch with her chickadees, and nuthatches as the local deer wandered up to join her, sensing the kindness in her presence.

Inside her home, Rose was a master of her crafts. Her kitchen was a place of warmth and incredible aromas, where she expressed her love through baking and cooking for those she held dear, or anyone with an empty belly. Her hands were always busy, whether she was creating something beautiful by hand or preparing a meal for her family.

Rose's greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her best friend and loving husband of 50 years, Richard Alter; her children, Alisha Snyder and her husband Tony, and Samuel Alter and his wife Michaele; and her sisters, Chris Wilson and Debbie McCarthy. She was the beloved "Mammie" to Johnny, Josh, Evan, Savannah, and Adeline, all of whom will cherish memories of her stories, her mountain home, and her loving spirit. She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Nell Tremont, and her brother, Peter J. Tremont.

Rose's celebration of life will be held this Spring for her family and close friends.
