It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Rose Marie Kaul, lovingly known as Roz, of Sheridan, Wyoming. Roz died on September 2nd, 2025 at the age of 81. She passed peacefully, in her home, with her family by her side.
Roz was born in Pierre, South Dakota on September 18th, 1943 to the late Eleanor Freier. Most of her early years were spent in Edgemont, SD. Here she got her first job as a car hop and it is probably why her favorite food was hamburgers. Roz spent her senior year at Rapid City Central High School, graduating in June of 1961. During her senior year she met her soulmate and husband of 65 years, Gerald (Whitey) Kaul. They were married on September 23rd, 1961. Whitey was employed with Peter Kiewit Construction Company, and so the adventure began.
First came the Camping Years as Roz called them, from 1961 to 1974. During this time, Roz and Whitey welcomed in their three children. Their first child was a son named Cameron Kaul, born on April 3rd, 1962 in Rapid City, SD. Their second child was a daughter, Tracy Eisele, born on June 5th, 1963 in Rapid City, SD. And finally they welcomed their third child and second daughter, Teresa (Teri) Barker, who was born on August 15th, 1964 in Sundance, WY. After the year Teri was born, the family moved at least once a year following Whitey's career. "Campspots" along the way following Sundance included: Wasta SD, Sturgis SD, back to Rapid City SD, Green River WY, Cheyenne WY, Sheridan WY (first time around), Wheatland WY, Gillette WY, Douglas WY, Elmo WY, and finally back to Sheridan, WY again in 1974.
After 1974, as the family moved out of those Camping Years, Roz was able to devote more time to hobbies and helping non profit organizations near to her heart. Some of her hobbies included bowling, ceramics work, and painting. Knitting and sewing always stood out as the most special, as Roz made sure her daughters' dolls always had something to wear. Roz was an early driver for the Meals on Wheels program in the Sheridan area. She drove 5 days a week to deliver meals to the Story, WY area. The local dog and cat shelter also held a special place in Roz's heart. Throughout her life there was always at least one dachshund by her side. She supported the Special Olympics, and was quite fond of the Festival of Trees event held annually. Decorating trees and helping children seemed to go hand in hand for her. While she never played sports, or even watched them, she always thought if shopping was a sport she might be good at it.
In 1986 the road called again due to a job promotion for Whitey. This time they went to Oklahoma City, OK. And in 1989 the road called them to Dallas/Fort Worth, TX. Finally, in 1992 came the last move, back to Sheridan, WY. Back Home. With a few spots in between. Enjoying the fruits of that hard life on the road, retirement gave Roz time to stay in one place. She was able to watch her grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow. She attended school plays, sporting events, and church on Sundays. She and Whitey traveled, and drove for fun again and not just to move. She had lunches with friends, sewed scarves for her grandkids, and was always ready for a trip to Billings to get in some cardio at the mall. She hosted holidays and loved a good bit of gossip. She would host family barbecues just because vidalia onions were in season, just to get everyone together. Her door was always open, just be sure you knocked first.
In the final years of her life, Roz was cared for by her loving husband and three children. She was always surrounded by love. Roz was preceded in death by her mother, Eleanor.
She is survived by her loving husband Whitey Kaul, as well as her children and their spouses, Cameron & Debi Kaul of Sheridan, WY, Tracy & Kyle Eisele of Sheridan, WY, and Teri & Bruce Barker of Sheridan, WY. She is also survived by her siblings, Joe Mason of Rapid City SD, Yvonne Estes of Rapid City SD, Rick Freier of Blackhawk SD, and Mike Freier of Brule, Nebraska.
Finally, she is survived by her grandchildren; Jordan Kaul of Denver, CO, Taylor Kaul of Campbell, CA, Kaul & Shelby Eisele and their children of Sheridan, WY, Alexandra Eisele of Sheridan, WY, Kade Eisele of Omaha, NE, Morgan & Ivan Stalick of Sheridan, WY, Brooke & Jim Johnson of Ranchester, WY, and Connor Isakson of Sheridan, WY.
