Rosemary Anne Hartman

With deep sorrow and abiding love, we announce the passing of Rosemary Anne Hartman, who peacefully departed this life on October 20, 2025, in Annandale, Virginia. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Rosemary was the daughter of the late Philip Schwartz and Laura Greenlaw. She brought joy, wit, and an unwavering devotion to the arts, her community, and the Chesapeake Bay, where she spent many joyful years sailing its waters.

Rosemary’s professional journey was as multifaceted as her spirit. She held roles at DC Children’s Hospital, Georgetown University, and ultimately retired from Arlington City Department of Real Estate Assessments. Yet it was her work in community theatre that defined her legacy. Her acting career began in New England, primarily in New Hampshire, but her talent carried her to stages in other states as well. Over 56 remarkable years, Rosemary transitioned from actress to director, helming countless productions across the Washington, D.C and Virginia areas, earning awards and accolades for her vision, mentorship, and artistic brilliance.

Her earlier path included working and attending classes at MIT and the University of New Hampshire, reflecting her lifelong commitment to learning and creativity. Rosemary’s brilliance extended beyond the stage. She was unbeatable at Scrabble, consistently outplaying friends and family with her sharp mind and strategic flair. Her love of word games, including Words with Friends and other puzzles, was a source of delight and connection, often sparking laughter and friendly rivalry around the table.

A passionate traveler and sailor, Rosemary spent over a decade as an active member of a sailing club, embracing adventure with the same zest she brought to every aspect of life. Her resilience was especially evident in her final chapter, as she faced cancer with extraordinary courage and grace, inspiring those around her with her strength.

Rosemary is survived by her devoted family: daughters Robin Nixon (partner Don Myers) of McLean, VA, and Laura Hartman of Manassas Park, VA; son Frank Greene of Springfield, MA; daughter-in-law Jean Hartman of Ashburn, VA; grandchildren Julia Nixon, Andrea Nixon (husband John Bendfelt), and Heather Greene (husband Mark Fitzpatrick); and great-grandchildren Saul O'Brien, Emma Fitzpatrick, and Ethan Fitzpatrick.

She was predeceased by her beloved son Robert Hartman; brother Earle Schwartz and his wife Rosemarie Langer; sister Phyllis Gould and her husband Fred Gould Sr.; and sister Carole Dugan, whose memory remains a cherished part of her enduring legacy.

She is also fondly remembered by the families of her late siblings, Earle Schwartz, Carole Dugan (husband Al Dugan), and Phyllis Gould, whose lives and legacies remain woven into Rosemary’s enduring story.

Rosemary leaves behind a vibrant tapestry of memories, woven through the lives she touched, the stories she told, and the love she gave. Her artistry, laughter, and fierce devotion to family and community will echo in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.

As we say goodbye, we celebrate the life of a truly extraordinary woman whose light will never dim.
