Ross Somers Obituary

Ross O. Somers
January 20, 1931 - June 1, 2023
Beaufort, South Carolina - Ross O. Somers, age 92, died peacefully at his home on June 1, 2023 in Beaufort, SC.
He was born on January 20,1931 to the parents of Samuel Edwards Somers and Epsie Tesh Somers in Alamance County, NC.
Ross met his beloved wife Carolyn J. Whedbee in Greensboro, NC in high school, married on December 20,1948 and would have celebrated 75 years of faithful marriage together this year. They went on to have 5 daughters. Ross and Carolyn devoted their entire lives working and providing for their daughters in Aiken, SC, where he was employed at the Savannah River Plant for 40 years. Ross began in construction and operations for the plant. He was a devoted husband and father, striving to ensure that his daughters experienced a fulfilling, active life: i.e. swim team activities, Clark's Hill weekend trips, band and cheerleading practices.
After retiring to Beaufort, he spent his time traveling with Carolyn to every state in U.S. and abroad. In addition to his love of gardening, his passion was harvesting citrus fruit trees so that he could share them with friends and neighbors. Ross also engaged himself in golfing and Senior Adult tournaments.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Carolyn; are four daughters, Georgia Somers Ansley, Laura Somers Logue, Marsha Somers Schroder and Susan Somers Boyter Daugherty; one deceased daughter, Barbara Ann "Biddy" Somers Ward, twenty grandchildren, twenty- seven great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
Anderson Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family.

Prayers for your family during this time. My wife, Glenda, and I knew Ross's father, Mr. "Ed" Samuel Edward Somers. He and I are cousins 2C1R and he also attended church with us. A delightful person to have know.

This picture was taken at the last family reunion in NC.

What a fun time everyone had. I passed out small cups of his homemade wines.

Georgia, you know you have my deepest and most sincere condolences on the loss of your father. Take comfort in knowing that you had him for a long time. See you soon.

Uncle Ross was always someone I looked up to as a model of kindness and compassion. Even with five girls in the household, he was always calm and understanding and exerted a quiet authority. He and Aunt Carolyn showed me how a married couple could love each other and co-exist while maintaining their own identities and follow their own interests. I'll always remember him at family gatherings as the quiet presence who was quick with a laugh and a smile. We will all miss him, but his gentle manner will stay with us as a reminder of how to deal with life's challenges.
