Roy Leon Eshom, Age 97, died on July 17, 2024. Roy was born June 18, 1927, on a farm near Mountain Grove, Missouri to George W. Eshom and Ruth Beatrice Goodell Eshom.
He graduated from Lamar High School in Lamar Missouri in 1945. He joined the Navy right out of High School on April 6, 1945, and was called to active duty the day after High School Graduation. Roy was one of three High School graduates called for active duty. This landed him in the career of Meteorology at Fleet Weather Central - Guam.
After a thirty-year career in the U.S. Navy, he retired as Chief Lieutenant Commander. Roy attended Memphis State University, Texas A&I College, and University of Maryland Extension Branch in Spain. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree with a minor in mathematics and science from Texas A&I University in 1976. He earned his master’s degree in education at Texas A&I in 1979. Roy chose Kingsville for their retirement home after a tour of duty in Kingsville from 1964-1966. Roy has been a Resident in Kingsville for more than 50 plus years. He began his new career as a teacher at Gillette Middle School in Kingsville, Texas and taught for 15 years.
Roy belonged to the following organizations: University Investment club, Past President; Retired officers club, past president; Texas retired teachers association, Legislative Chairman; Kleberg County adult Literacy Program former tutor; Naval Weather Service association; American Legion; Disabled American Veterans; Fleet Reserve; and VW-1.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Betty Lou Eshom; daughter, Linda Eshom; son, Robert Eshom; parents; brother, Robert James Eshom; and sisters, Florance May Eshom, Lois Muriel Eshom, Grace Lemore Eshom, Helen Vivian Eshom, and Lucille Evelyn Eshom.
Roy will forever be in the memory of his extended family, Gilbert and Irma Garcia; their children, and grandchildren; and nieces, Debbie Cornell, Cathy Hailey, and Cheri Sampson. He was a wonderful father/grandfather to their family; and was truly loved and will be deeply missed.
The family will receive condolences from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, at Turcotte-Piper Mortuary; with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. A chapel service will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 25, 2024, at Turcotte-Piper Mortuary. A rite of committal and interment will take place at a later date.
