Roy spent part of his early childhood in Boswell, Oklahoma, at the age of eleven Roy moved to Del City. During his years at Del City High School, Roy proved to be a gifted athlete. He played basketball as a guard, football as a quarterback for the Del City Eagles, ran track, and excelled in baseball as both a pitcher and first baseman. His athletic talent and determination earned him an athletic scholarship to Oklahoma State University.
Roy attended Oklahoma State University, where he continued his athletic career, playing both football and basketball. In basketball, he played as a guard and was coached by the respected Henry Iba. Roy graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1962 with a degree in Business.
While in high school, Roy met the love of his life, Beverly. The two began dating as teenagers and built a life together rooted in love and companionship. They would be wed on December 22, 1962 at the Del City United Methodist Church.

Later in life, he took up bicycling and often rode routes from Park Lane to Broadway, then to Hedrick and back. He had a deep love for photography and was an avid baseball card collector, especially enjoying cards featuring Nolan Ryan and Ted Williams. Roy was a lifelong sports fan who closely followed the Boston Celtics during the 1970s and 1980s, the Dallas Cowboys, and he especially enjoyed attending Texas Rangers baseball games.
Faith played an important role in Roy's life. He was an active member of Highlands United Methodist Church and especially enjoyed the fellowship found during the church's men's cookouts. Roy and Beverly also shared a love of country dancing, learning to dance together and enjoying that time side by side.
