Roy Perkins, a cherished father, grandfather, great grandfather, and brother age 88, of
San Marcos, Texas, passed away peacefully on the morning of February 26, 2026, surrounded by his family. He leaves behind a legacy of love, hard work, and unwavering devotion to those he cherished most.
Roy was born in November 1937 to Jack W. Perkins and Daisy Belle Posey Perkins and was a proud lifelong resident of San Marcos. From a very young age, he developed a strong work ethic while helping his parents operate their butcher shop, BBQ restaurant, and grocery store. Through those early years, he learned lessons of responsibility and dedication that shaped the rest of his life.
He graduated from San Marcos High School in 1956 and later attended Southwest Texas State College. Shortly after high school, Roy answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Army Reserves.
Roy met the love of his life, Ann Perkins, on a blind date in 1962. From that moment forward, they were inseparable. They were married in April 1963 in Waco, Texas, beginning a 61-year partnership built on love, loyalty, and devotion. In 1964, they welcomed their only child, Donna Perkins. Their family grew in 1985 with the arrival of their only grandchild, Rhonda Altenhoff Giesen, and her husband, Jason Giesen. In 2008, they were blessed with their first great-grandchild, Mackenzie Giesen, followed by Preslee Giesen in 2010. Roy was affectionately known as "Great" by his great-granddaughters, a name that suited him perfectly.
Before beginning his long and distinguished career with Stokes Construction Company, Roy worked for Ted Breihan Electric. He later dedicated more than 50 years as Chief Estimator for Stokes Construction Company, helping build structures of all sizes across Texas and leaving a lasting mark on the communities he served. His integrity, strong work ethic, and commitment to excellence earned him the respect of colleagues and friends alike.
Roy loved life's simple pleasures. Hunting, fishing, and spending time at his ranch with family and friends were among his greatest joys. He was a smooth-stepping two-stepper who loved to dance. He enjoyed working with his hands in his workshop, building birdhouses, fixing treasured items, and creating something new from whatever materials he had on hand. In recent years, he found special comfort sitting on his back porch feeding the deer, watching the birds, and smiling whenever he spotted a cardinal.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Ann Perkins; his parents Jack and Daisy Bell Perkins, his father- and mother-in-law, Edna Earl Russell and Ralph W. Russell; and his brothers-in-law, Wade Butler and Bill Boyd.
Roy is survived by his daughter, Donna Perkins; granddaughter Rhonda Giesen and her husband, Jason; great-granddaughters Mackenzie and Preslee; his sisters, Ginger Perkins Boyd and Brenda Perkins Butler; numerous nieces and nephews; and his precious Pomeranian, Gidget, who brought him constant companionship and joy.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Avery Maldonado and Denisha Stamps of Cornerstone Home Health, and Erma Garcia, as well as to Heart to Heart Hospice. The care, compassion, friendship, and support they provided uplifted Roy and brought comfort to his family.
Roy will be remembered for his steady presence, his deep love for his family, and the quiet strength with which he lived his life. His legacy will continue through the generations who loved him dearly.
Visitation and funeral services will both be held at Westover Baptist Church, 1310 Advance Street,
San Marcos, Texas 78666.
Visitation will take place on Thursday, March 5, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., and the funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 6, 2026. Burial will follow at San Marcos City Cemetery, with a reception to follow the graveside service at Westover Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Operation Orphans, a nonprofit organization that has provided children with unique and meaningful outdoor experiences by sponsoring hunting and fishing trips in the Texas Hill Country since 1960. In many cases, these trips offer children their very first opportunity to experience the outdoors in such a special and lasting way. November 14, 1937 - February 26, 2026
