Beverly Henze Porter, age 76, of Mathis, Texas, was called home on February 8, 2026, surrounded by the warmth and love of her family. She was born on November 15, 1949, in San Antonio, Texas, to parents Franklin C. Henze and Geraldine "Jerry" Vancil Henze. Beverly was a cherished educator and a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Her journey was marked by a passion for teaching, a deep devotion to her family, and an enduring love for animals, particularly her beloved dogs.
Beverly grew up in Mathis where she attended Mathis High School and was Feature Twirler in the Mathis Pirate Band. Her senior year was spent in San Marcos, Texas, where she graduated from San Marcos High School in 1968. She went on to graduate from South West Texas State University in 1974, where she received her Bachelors of Science in Education with specialization in early childhood education.
Beverly began her teaching career at Crockett Elementary in San Marcos, where she inspired countless second graders with her vibrant spirit and unwavering dedication. In 1977, Beverly's life took a beautiful turn when she married her soulmate, William Charles "Charlie" Porter. Their love story flourished as they waltzed across Texas together, racing horses, and eventually returning to her hometown of Mathis, Texas. There Beverly continued her illustrious teaching career until 2013. She captivated the hearts of her students, earning a nomination and ultimately winning Teacher of the Year in 1999—a testimony to her profound impact on the lives of many.
Beverly's warmth, kindness, and delicious snacks (and chocolate milk) found a special place in the hearts of her students. She had a gift for working with children with learning disabilities, as she nurtured each one with care and creativity. Beverly affectionately called her students "B Porter’s Busy Bees," a reflection of the lively spirit her students brought into the classroom. Her love for her teaching and passion for education transcended generations. Her granddaughter fondly recalls memories of sneaking out of her own class to go sit in her grandmother's classroom to watch her teach her students.
Since she was young, Beverly had a passionate and adventurous spirit that was evident in her actions. As a young girl, she considered the local dog catcher her enemy, often chasing after the truck to rescue and save her beloved stray dogs. That devotion to animals never ceased, as Beverly could always be found rescuing, rehoming, and helping animals in need. She had two particular favorite dogs in her lifetime, a German Shepherd named Prissy Porter and a beagle from Mississippi named Mister Sippy. Mister Sippy passed away in 2006, at the ripe old age of 15, while Prissy is still surviving, also 15 years old. Both faithful companions were able to enjoy long lives due to Beverly's tender care.
A woman of many talents, Beverly drew joy from literature, the arts, and various hobbies, excelling in ballet, modern dance, and horse racing alongside her dear husband Charlie. She had the honor of being asked to represent the Mathis VFW in several beauty pageants, giving her the opportunity to participate in the Miss Hemisphere pageant in San Antonio, where she was proud to be named runner-up (due only to her young age). She was involved in many community efforts as a member of the Mathis Progressive Women's League, the Mathis Literary Club, and was the Buc Days Pirate Queen Representative for the Mathis VFW, reflecting her commitment to her community and to those around her.
Throughout her life, Beverly remained a steadfast family-oriented woman, serving as the caretaker for her little family and later for her mother, father, and husband as they fell ill. Beverly left behind a legacy of love and support now passing the baton to her daughter, Sherry and granddaughter, Mary Dorin— who is embracing the teaching profession just as her grandmother had.
Beverly's powerful presence was felt not only in her classroom but in all areas of her life. People will fondly remember her quick wit, her contagious smile and laughter, and the twinkle in her eye that always hinted at her playful spirit. Her cherished home-cooked meals were a source of joy for family and friends alike.
Beverly is reunited with her beloved husband, William Charles Porter; dear parents, Franklin C. Henze and Geraldine Vancil Henze; and faithful beagle, Mister Sippy. She leaves her memories and legacy to her loving daughter, Sherry Porter, and adored granddaughter, Mary Dorin Gibbens, who will undoubtedly carry on Beverly's legacy of love and inspiration into future generations. She is also survived by her 15-year-old loyal German shepherd, Prissy Porter.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations may be made Beverly's name to the Mathis VFW Chapter, the Mathis Animal Shelter, or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
As we remember Beverly Henze Porter, let us celebrate the remarkable life she lived, a life dedicated to making a difference in the lives of others, filled with laughter, love, and an unyielding commitment to her family, students, and animals alike. Her memory will live on in the hearts of those privileged to know her, exemplifying the beauty of a life well-lived.
Rite of Committal and Interment will be held at 12 PM on Thursday, February 12, 2026, at Cenizo Hill Cemetery.
