Roy Lee Pressley, a devoted family man and esteemed veteran, passed away peacefully at his residence surrounded by loved ones on February 9, 2025, at the age of 89. Born on January 13, 1936, in Haywood County, Roy dedicated much of his life to service, first through his military commitment and later in his community.
Roy’s military career spanned over two decades, beginning with three years in the Marines, followed by an illustrious 22 years in the U.S. Air Force, where he attained the rank of Senior Master Sergeant during the Vietnam War era. His dedication did not end with retirement; for over 30 years, he was deeply involved with the American Legion at Post 47, where he held numerous influential positions, including State Commander for one year and State Adjutant for five. His contributions reached the national level, showcasing his commitment to fellow veterans and their families.
After his military service, Roy owned and operated the BP Fueling Station on Russ Avenue for 20 years, becoming a valued member of the community. His profound impact extended beyond business, as he was also actively engaged in youth programs, particularly the Tar Heel Boys State Program, where he served as counselor, Committee Chair, and ultimately as its director.
In addition to his professional achievements, Roy was a man of faith and was of the Baptist denomination. He took joy in the simple pleasures of life, often found on the golf course or caring for his two donkeys.
Roy is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Winnie Farmer Pressley; their two sons, Terry Pressley and his wife Deborah, and Jerry Pressley and his wife Lisa Marie; nine grandchildren: Joseph Pressley, Daniel Pressley, Nicholas Pressley, Susan Fowler, Angel Pressley, Matthew Pressley, Ella Reid, Johannes Pressley, and Anna Pressley; as well as 19 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his father, Lonnie Pressley; his mother, Elizabeth Smith Pressley; his sister, Nellie Jones; and his brothers, Ralph and James Pressley.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, February 17th, 2025 at 1:30 p.m. at Allens Creek Baptist Church with Reverends Scotty Patrick and Matthew Pressley officiating. A visitation will be held prior at the church from 12:00 p.m. until service time. Following the services a burial will be held at Green Hill Cemetery with Military Honors.
