Roy Sanders Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Kernan Funeral Service on Oct. 1, 2025.
Roy Mitchell Sanders, age 79, of Lincoln Park, Michigan, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2025. He was born on July 3, 1946, in Madison, West Virginia, to Charles and Garnett (McNeely) Sanders.
After graduating from high school, Roy attended Henry Ford College, but his studies were interrupted by a call to serve his country. He was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, where he served honorably and was awarded a Purple Heart for his bravery and sacrifice.
Following his military service, Roy built a successful career as an engineer with Great Lakes Steel, where he worked tirelessly for over 40 years. Outside of work, Roy enjoyed his annual fishing trip to Fletcher's Pond with friends, and he loved taking vacations-especially cruises-where he could relax and explore new places. He was also an avid Detroit sports fan, always rooting passionately for the Lions and Tigers.
Roy loved to gamble and found joy in the camaraderie of his fellow veterans. A proud veteran, he frequently visited the local VFW in Lincoln Park, where he shared stories and friendship with others who served.
Above all, Roy cherished his family. His love, kindness, and unwavering support made him a beloved father, grandfather, and friend.
His passing was preceded by that of his parents: Charles and Garnett Sanders; Brothers: George and Stan Sanders
To cherish his memory, he leaves his loving daughters: Janice (Chad) Harrelson and Donna (John) Spencer; Grandchildren: Tyler (Kareny) Long, Avery Harrelson, Brooke Spencer and Colton Spencer; Great-grandchildren: Grayson, Hayden and Haylee Long.
A visitation to celebrate Roy's life will be held on Sunday, October 5, 2025, from 11:00 am - 4:00 pm, followed by a military honors service at 4:00 pm, at Kernan Funeral Services, 1020 Fort Street, Lincoln Park, Michigan.
