ROY DOUGLAS SASSMAN: 1943 - 2026
Roy Douglas Sassman, known to all as Doug, passed away peacefully on March 23, 2026 surrounded by his loving family. His life was defined by service-service to his family, his community, and his country-and he leaves behind a legacy of integrity, kindness, generosity and unwavering dedication.
Doug was the son of the late Roy E. and Martha Sassman, was born on September 3, 1943 and grew up and attended K-12 in
Wilbur, WA. Post graduation, he answered the call to serve his country by joining the United States Air Force, proudly contributing his skills and commitment to the mission of protecting and supporting others while demonstrating the discipline, commitment, and honor that would guide him throughout his life.
After his military service, Doug embarked on a 30+ year-long career of hands on, people focused work as a telephone installer and repairman serving Chewelah WA and the surrounding area. His meticulous approach and willingness to lend a hand made him a respected colleague and a trusted presence throughout his community.
His commitment to serve extended far beyond his profession. A natural leader with a heart for helping others, he volunteered with the Chewelah WA Fire Department for 30+ years, where he eventually became Fire Chief. In this role he embodied courage, leadership, and selflessness, dedicating countless hours to protecting and supporting his community. His fellow firefighters respected him not only as a leader, but as a mentor and friend.
Away from work and civic duty, Doug found great joy in his model railroad hobby. Building intricate layouts and detailed miniature worlds gave him endless satisfaction and provided a peaceful space where his imagination and craftsmanship came together.
Above all, Doug will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family, his steady dependability, and his generous heart. He was the one you could always count on-the one who showed up, who quietly made life better for those around him and would lend a hand at the drop of a hat. His presence made life richer, safer, and more meaningful for those fortunate enough to know and love him.
Doug is survived by his wife Mary of 57 years, his daughters LeAnn and Amy (Jeff), his grandson Jacen, his brother Greg (Teri), his niece Stephanie, his nephew Daniel (Jasmine) as well as extended family of whom he was very fond.
Per Doug's wishes, no service will be held.
